My samson post is bolted to 2 large right angle plates strapped either side of the chain locker bulk head.
I'm going to add a Lofran Royal horizontal windlass to my hardware. Has anyone got an opinion on replacing the samson post on my 34 footer with the said windlass.
Thanks you.

there are likely to be large horizontal forces on the winch, so you may wish to consider a backing plate of say 15mm ply of minimum 300 by 300mm with preferably contiguous support from structural members e.g. deck beams. If you remove the samson post, will there be any vertical support for the new winch ?

Make sure that you provide a strong point to make off the chain. Leaving the chain on the windlass is OK for short periods. However, in strong winds and current it places a load on the windlass which can effect bearings over time. For example, I have a horizontal windlass where a samson post could be mounted; two cleats on each side are oversize with large backing pads. The anchor chain is tied off to these via a chain hook on a length of warp. I attach the hook and make off the end of the warp to the cleat and then just pay out on the windlass until all the load is on the cleat. Just an example to help you decide on the installation requirements.
