I have a bucket full of recently out of date flares that have been kept in a climate controlled area ( dehumidifier on board) so are in pristine condition.

A friend of mine deals with out of date food by testing a batch and re-dating.

Why cant I test fire half the flares and re date the rest ?

Is it actually illegal to have out of date flares on board as long as I have a few in date ones as well ?

its not a legal requirement to have any flares, is it? So I cant see why out of date ones can be illegal.
OK as a back up, but Id certainly like to have in dates on board

I agree I need a complete supply of in date ones, what I am trying to do is keep the slightly out of code ones on board as spares rather than waste them next November.

Dont you usually wait till Nov 5th to try them /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

or are you going to get the old John Bull set out to redate them /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

just make sure you get the letters up the right way with the JB set

No I havent done that this year after this forum taught me how irresponsible that was /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Brillaint idea!

I have just re-dated the registration of my car and now I don't have to submit it for its first MOT until next year.

According to the Which? report, if a plant has surplus meat at the end of the day, it can put a new use-by date on the pack and send it out the next day.

This means chicken could be re-dated several times, with no track of how old the meat actually is.

The MHS source told the magazine: "Once processing plants begin to re-date chicken, they quickly lose control of it."
Most supermarkets sell meat that was slaughtered seven to nine days earlier.

However the article claims re-dating chicken could mean people are buying meat that was slaughtered 20 days previously, without even knowing it.

This practice is not actually illegal.

Yes you can. I do it all the while and I will share my technique with you all.
Ist you need a good blow torch to burn away the old stamp marks .You need to get plenty of heat otherwise it wont remove the etch. Then give the flare a good rub down with a wire brush.
Now comes the tricky bit. You need a set of stamps of the type used for marking steel. Select the dates you want and then taking a3 pound Ball Pain hammer commence stamping.
Health and safety regulations state that you much put up warning notices saying " Beware eejuts at work"

Dont say that!!!! Some bloody idiot will try and do that!!

I mean it, you dont know the inteligence level of some folk hereabouts! Next thing you know, you'll have a burnt up yachtie on your conscience. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

No, in fact, unless your boat is coded for charter, there is no legal requirement to have any flares on board. If you are satisfied that for your own safety that the flares on board meet your needs, forget the dates.

ok, I agree flares are not cheap. But for jeeves sake, it could be your life that depends on them. When you actually want to use one in ernest...what would you pay for it then?

Come on guys get real...boat worth sat £200,000 . Annual fuel bill say £3000. but oh no I cant pay £60 for new flares??

Right oh Aidy dont forget your signs. Seriously though, Distress flares cannot be redated, and who would want to any way. There is no legal requirement for flares in UK waters but you go to the continent and see what happens. You are not supposed to have outdated flares either. Distress flares are dated because as a solas requirement parachute flares have to maintain a set luminous intensity (known as candela I think) and have to achieve a certain altitude and burn time. The same applies with handhelds of course with the exception of altitude. No Manufacturer will guarantee this criteria after a certain length of time. The flares will not deterioate to the extent of being unstable for quite a while.I have deployed flares that have been 10 years out of date and still they work. Personally I rotate our flares so we have I set just out of date and one set in date.

just off to experiment... will report back with results later

Remember that the hotter the flame, the better the result - and don't worry, it is quite safe.

Well, it will be for me way over here.
