Can I loose my old strainer?

Yesterday, after completing an engine flush on my Bukh I checked my strainer to find it seized. Can I just fit a ball valve with a hose tail to my through hull, then just use a plastic sea strainer. I'm worried if I'm out at sea, and need to check my strainer I might not be able to open it.

I was to replace with this item SEAFLO Raw Cooling Water Intake Strainer for Seawater Marine Boat 1" 1.25" 1.5" | eBay

the 1/2" version I would use.

I actually think my set up is wrong, because when my boat takes to the ground all the water drains out of the engine.

the picture below is how I'm thinking to set the strainer up.

I have a Vetus strainer much as you show. It's much more effective and has a larger capacity than the old type on my previous boat, as well as being easier to get to.

I have just fitted exactly this for the same reason, the old metal one was seized as well as being manky.
I think the instructions say for the bottom to be 6 inches about the waterline or thereabouts which is what I did.

Works great you just have to make sure the lid is on tight otherwise air gets in and not enough water is pulled through.

You can get them cheaper than that though:
Seaflo Sea Water Filter Small 0.5 – 0.75 Inch

Cheaper because the one originally linked to is the larger size.

Much better than the below waterline type (that is why the water runs out when you dry out),

The challenge will be to remove the old one and fit a DZR ball valve and hose tail to the existing skin fitting. Probably best to cut the whole lot out and start again.

I left my old metal one in place, with the plastic sieve basket removed to save any maintenance and if necessary I can open it to rod through to clear the intake. I fitted a Vetus style filter in line, at a height that means the normal waterline is about 40mm up the filter. I can safely open the lid when the boat is at rest and the water level is stable, and it is self priming just by opening and without needing the engine running.

Edit If I’m taking the ground I close my seacock

This is what I have for my BUKH DV10ME. The Vetus strainer connects to a Blakes 3/4" seacock.

It works very well, and for flushing the engine through with fresh water I only need to close the seacock, take the lid of the strainer and run fresh water into it.

I've got a bronze strainer similar to yours sitting atop the ball valve. If you can get it to open freely (lubricate with silicone grease), it makes rodding through the intake very easy. I've then got a Vetus type strainer arranged as per your diagram.
Similar to Dellquay's suggestion.

I only replaced ball valves and skin fittings last year, and they unscrew fine.

Good. Just replace the strainer with a 1/2" ball valve and hose tail in DZR and mount the strainer immediately above if you can. When you dry out water will drain out of the pipe through the ball valve if left open but the keeps a head of water. It should self prime when water returns. This is my setup
