My Westerly Griffon came to me with the standard genoa and a working jib with a bolt rope.I don't really want to have to drop the genoa to use the luff groove in the spar so would like to add an extra stay that can be brought into use when required leaving the genny rolled up .The thing is can I have the working jib altered to have a wire luff so I can hank it onto the new stay or have I got to buy a new sail?

If you have a wire luff do you still need another stay? Cannot you just pull the sail up and tension it using the halyard? Paul

If you are going to fit another stay, you don't need a wire luff on the sail as well. Just get your sailmaker to fit it with hanks. This system will allow you to get a hank-on storm jib as well if you so desire.

best to hank on rather than set flying. i've had to hand a flying headsail in a rising wind a few times and it's no joke!

if you just add hanks you get two benefits: (a) you can adjust the set by playing with halyard tension, (b) you can go back to using the luff groove without an expensive visit to a sailmaker.
