Can diesel affect ropes

Somehow a bucket that had a load of 6mm rope got diesel in it. There's quite a lot so I'd rather not throw it away, unless it's deteriorated from exposure to diesel.
How would I know what the rope is made of?

It 's contaminated and probably degraded. Ditch it!

No problem with nylon, polyester or polypropylene'

The biggest problem will be getting it sufficiently free of diesel fuel

some ropes harden with petroleum products .... some degrade .... some just get smelly and horrible to handle. ....

Difficult to get clean once its got into the rope.
