Bought a new digital TV with built in Freeview for the boat but cannot get a signal also upgraded aerial to a digital one with built in booster but still no signal. I boat in Kent. Have gone back to analogue.

According to Digital UK the coverage for Kent is that we should be able to pick up all Freeview stations but I can't even get a signal and my neighbour on his boat only picks up about two stations and they are very weak and sometimes disappear. Anyone got any ideas, please? Looks like boaters will have a problem after the analogue is turned off by 2012.

The round status ones are ok but make sure its the digital version, when I bought my phillips lcd tv freeview box etc I also bought a cheap domestic tv aerial for about 25 quid, used molegrips to hold it to mast lamp bracket and it worked a treat. Try usual retailers, currys etc they keep em all.

I had a Status for a few years, They're omni directional which i think means they're rubbish no matter where the transmitter is. I bought a cheap set top aerial which gets a better picture on analogue and in certain areas gets digital too.

I've got a Triax UFO omni directional aerial - havent been anywhere to get DVB yet, but Dogwatch has one and I think he said he went from 4 channels to all the freeview once he got it up the mast.

"On board we have been using a multitude of set top type aerials with limited success. A few weeks ago we had our mast down to do some work and used the opportunity to fit a triax UFO aerial up top.

Back on the mooring, whammo, 30 odd channels appeared, clear as a bell. Didn't stand a chance with any of the other aerials at all."

But he didnt get any digital with it on top of a broom handle, so it might not work for mobos:

I'm not on a boat, but my TV can get freeview with an aluminium coat hanger, so you need to get a better view of the transmittor station mast.

Any modern ae will work. The issue with old ae is that they don't have built in 4g filters, if used in the wrong 4g areas then the 4g signal overloads the ae amp and the digital tv signal becomes low level noise and is lost. You can't add 4g filter as amp is built into ae and filter needs to be installed before the amp.
Good news is you get work paid for by mobile companies, bad news loads of hassle.
If your ae does not have built in amp then you can get 4g filter from here.
