..... of a book written by a naval officer who built a yacht in Singapore and then sailed it to England?

Naval Officer Peter Hamilton bought Vertue 44 'Speedwell of Hong Kong' in Singapore and sailed her to UK via South Africa. He then bought another Vertue 'Salmo'.

The voyages of 'Salmo' are covered in his book 'The Restless Wind'. He singlehanded from Scotland to Labrador, flew back to get married then returned with wife to sail on to Panama, Galapagos, Tahiti and Los Angeles.

Although documented, I don't recall him mentioning the Speedwell trip although I suspect this was down to understatement and modesty typical of his time.

Speedwell is now junk rigged and currently in South America. She has been sailed singlehanded by a lady for many years. Google 'Speedwell of Hong Kong' for up to date information.

I have the American published Restless Wind. You are welcome to borrow it if you pm address.

If that is the one, there is an interesting connection with my Eventide. after he left the forces he worked for a while for Hartwells in Plymouth who were diversifying (from office furniture and coffins) to boatbuilding with Griffiths designs, firstly the Eventide and then the Golden Hind. My boat was the first he supervised, having refined the plans based on his experience of building the first one. The client was a consultant psychiatrist and everything was the best available at the time, including Cascover sheathing. As a result the boat is still sound and just finished a 50 year refit.

Thanks for the interesting responses. 'Borer Bee' seems to be what I had in mind but I was mistaken in thinking her builder had written a book about her. The 'Speedwell' book looks like a good read so I'll take up your kind offer of a loan of it, Chinita.

Glad you got the result!

'The Restless Wind' is all about 'Salmo' rather than 'Speedwell'. Nonetheless a damn good read and puts many of today's perspectives on ocean sailing into focus.

Will post on Monday.

Another thumbs up for ' The Restless Wind ', my copy has been a favourite book ever since I was a boy, I understand it's highly sought after among Vertue owners, and rightly so.

Not seen this before, Peter was my father. He had Speedwell built in Hong Kong before sailing her back to the UK whilst in the Navy. He wrote up his log but it was never published. I’m biased but believe The Restless Wind is superb, beautifully written and, as mentioned very understated, I’ve been re reading the book and watching the film again and having, in the past, thought his flat cut spinnaker flown from a pole lashed across the pulpit was a bit naff now see that it made a self sailing arrangement downwind in the days before self steering and was probably something he thought about and devised in his trip across the Indian ocean. Incidentally this was made more interesting when his Chronometer broke and he had only a DR for his longitude. Also the shots he took, with a Bolex 16mm cine camera from up the mast, whilst single handing the Atlantic deserve huge respect in themselves. likewise some of the shots from the prout in mid ocean. He wasn’t a great believer in risk assessments.

When Chinita quoted you it shows as a quote from Parsifal. ??
Easily explained: change of user name.

Odd thing is that one's own past posts are automatically amended show one's new user name but not quoted posts.

I don't know why that is, but Stork_III could probably explain it.
