Can anyone name this breed?

I think it's an Egyptian Goose

Seen quite a few on the river over the last couple of years although the RSPB site would have it that you will only see them in Norfolk

Saw a pair with three or four goslings this weekend so they're early starters!

wow, thanks for that. I've seen quite a few pairs at Marlow/Henley over recent years. Including a nesting pair under the canvas of 'Trotwood' (Cookham Dean) at the moment - a boat we hope to purchase subject, to the delayed river trial :)

We have a pair that live on the lock island. They have done for a couple of years now.

The female has a damaged wing , but it doesn't stop her getting around ok , she just runs quickly. Her wing was damaged by 'Big George' the aggressive cob swan who lives at Trowlock Island and comes downriver to cause mayhem periodically. Her mate never leaves her.

They have an incredibly loud 'hissing honk' which can really give you a fright in the middle of the night if they are outside the lock office window !!

If they are 'ornamental' escapees - I wonder how and why they are called Egyptian Geese??

My Management - the oracle on such matters says:-

Alopochen aegiptiacus Aka "spectacled geese" for obvious reasons.
Like many non indigenous species they were brought in to brighten up folks estates in the 18th century- that's how Canadian Geese came about.

Being furrin' they tend to have a different outlook on things :o and find out sceptered isle more congenial than their place of origin and breed like rabbits (a Roman import).

The Canadians are a pest because the management of their young is very efficient (watch how schools of them progress along the river and graze in managed groups).

Egyptians live in smaller family groups, but are every expanding - on a smaller scale. Their call is louder and more penetrating than the North American variety. Once established they tend to take up residence and wake me/us up very early in the morning.

The bu**rs poo all over my dinghy and their output is full of grit so more of a challenge to remove.

"I dont really mind what they are called provided they are properly roasted and served with some nice gravy"

What a cruel, cruel man! Lol!
