Can anyone identify this type of rope?

Long shot from a photo I know! 9mm dia, braid outer with a black thread running down the core, no inner braid. I have no experience of climbing ropes but I think that is what it may be as the bod who gave it to me years ago was a telecoms aerial engineer. (Can't ask him myself because the poor beggar fell and killed himself!)

Don't think it is climbing rope because the sheath is too knobbly. A relatively smooth sheath is required for climbing to reduce friction when run through a number of running belays.
