This pole was part of the inventory of our recently acquired 34' sailing boat,
It is approx 1.5m long, cylindrical apart from a flattened face on one side, a grip at one end and in the middle. At the other end a bracket of some sort, we did not find anything that would fit in the bracket.
Does anyone know what it might be for please?

Have you asked the previous owners or asked the yacht broker to ask them?

I use an identical device. That stainless bracket takes a spring loaded clip which has grooves machined in it's sides. The clip slides into the bracket small end first. Attached to the clip I have a temporary mooring line so that I can reach out with the pole, and clip onto a Bouy or mooring cleat when picking up or coming alongside. Pull the pole away leaving the line secured to the bouy/cleat.

Addition...Have a hunt round the boat for a Big snap link with grooved sides.
