Hi all, one of my volvo penta 290 dpd outdrive's has 'lost' it's upper gearbox cover. The cynical side of me suspects that it may have been nicked, but either way is not there now. Rk marine can supply a new one but it will cost me £200+, this is it outside my budget, I could do with a preloved cover that is in need of a new home. Here is a photo showing both drives, the bit I need is clear.

If anyone can help, I would be most grateful.

If all else fails could you make one in GRP/Epoxy using the existing one as a master????? Not sure what the fastenings are like on the reverse though...

If you go bargain hunting the part no to look for is 3857148.

In country of origin the part name is Täckkåpa so if no luck elsewhere, some searching over there might help.

New part (even as 3rd party copy) in Sweden is approx same price as you've been quoted already.

Edit add: Just got word from a shop in Sweden: One, last, piece in stock - used in good nick. Price SEK 1.000 (about £100 I guess). For two-screw fitment.

I just ordered one today for my falcon 27 from keypart the part no is v854605
£84.99 only one fixing screw on these at the bottom according to keypart they are dp-a drives

When I worked for a living we had a guy come and ask price of this cover
How much ? Went away
Few days later another guy from same location came in "somebody nicked my cover. How much is a new one?
This recurred several times till someone bought a new one.
Surprising how many people were prepared to steal from their fellow boat owners!

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses, the part I need is number 854605 I think as my drive has a single screw attachment with a pin at the top to hold it in place. Armed with this number I have found the item on the rk marine website, available for the bargain price of £94.44 including vat. I have an account with them so I might get it cheaper. This is much more reasonable than the £200 + I thought I would need to pay.

I can't get this part number to work on the keypart website though, I will ring them in the morning.

I'll update once I have more information tomorrow night.

Steve

Yep it ain't listed on the keypart site had to give them a call bloke on the phone said they only list service parts on the site

I always use blue loctite on the screws and cable ties as a belts and braces. Have seen too many go missing in the Marina, and they do have a habit of going missing in use.My cover comes off as soon as boat comes out of the water, and back on minutes before launch.

In the 1970s in the town where my parents lived there were 8 Austin 1300GT cars; and only 7 sets of 1300GT wheel trims. Those 7 sets of trims used to rotate between the 8 cars on a regular basis !

I've ordered the cover from rk marine, I can get a discount on the £94.44 retail price. Speaking to Keypart they were very slightly cheaper, but to get the cover to me for the weekend would have cost me £14.40 as their free delivery is not guaranteed next day.

They seemed really helpful though so I'm going to remember them for the future.

Looking forward to go getting the boat looking her best now, she's scheduled for relaunch next week and I can't wait to get out and play :)

The blimming things do come lose and fall off.Lost one a few years ago and made very sure new one was well fixed on.

Considering the cost, it might be worth making a retaining cable, like they use on car rocker panel trims, so if it does fall off due to the bolts coming undone , the cable means it's still held on. Also, consider using some security bolts if you think it's being stolen !
