Can anyone give a name to this thingamajig please?

This thing was attached to the upper most washboard on our yacht and turns but doesn't have any way of locking.

The shaft is only 8mm dia and I just cannot find anything like it on the interweb.

Was hoping to be able to find something that I could house the outer arm in & attach a simple padlock as a deterrent. Problem is I don't know what it's called?

Personally I have 2 X hasp and staple . Two, one either side, so that there is no staple in the middle of the hatch to cut my head open ....... again!

I've spent many a lost hour searching for hatch locks for boats...... cam locks are favourite but won't solve this quandary. Would like to keep this and make it useful if at all possible... it obviously worked for someone at some point. Maybe just leaving it unlocked, not really happy with that idea though.

I think I almost recall that these locks appeared after the 1979 Fastnet race, as an easy, positive means of securing the sliding hatch. A number of boats lost their washboards when hatches slid open as the boat became inverted.
It became part of RORC regulation to positively secure washboards. Pretty sure.

I used two of these to secure the cockpit hatches. Very secure, very easy to fit and very easy to unlock

Don't like the sound of that - "inverted"!!!! No, nope and definitely not.... doesn't bear thinking of. However given the history of this boat I think you might well be right. Would like to see one in action and it there is any adaption I could make to make it lockable, at least from the outside. Thanks for your thoughts.

Don't think it was ever intended to be locked - just a neat way of meeting the regulations for a simple means of keeping the sliding hatch retained, but easy to release if necessary.

Yes most likely fitted to meet ocean racing requirements. ie a latch to positively hold everything in place but is operable from both inside and outside. Worth leaving as is and fittinfg an entirely new security lock. ol'will

I'm going to use two SS spring loaded barrel bolts. A cord will be attached to both so that the bolts can be "unlocked" from outside

I'd enlarge the hole in the washboards and fit one of these: Force 4 Hatch Lock | Force 4 Chandlery

You might need to reduce the length of the latching arm to make it fit, but otherwise very simple solution.

Good question! Only with a screwdriver, I'm afraid. It's for locking the companionway when you're out, not for locking yourself in. My boat is never locked, so this requirement did not occur to me, sorry.
