Can a \'normal\' locksmith copy a Volvo key?

Seem to have misplced one of the keys for the KAD32, always like to have a spare. Local locksmith is pretty good, deals with Multi-Lock and more complicated keys etc....

Do you think they'd be able to make a copy? Yes, the easy thing to do would be to ask them /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif But i'm away until the weekend - Would just like to know if any of you guys had it done before

Same key as this here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volvo-Penta-Igniti...A1%7C240%3A1318

Thanks

Depends if he has the blank. Probably not. Some shops will order a blank for you, then make your key, others cant be arsed for the small cost of a key.

Re: Can a \'normal\' locksmith copy a Volvo key?

I recently got one done for a 24 year-old (marine) Volvo at one of those little key-cutting kiosks and it worked!

However, to find a suitable blank he had to dig one out from his archive that had been intended - apparently - for a 'Datsun' (I believe this was automobile from the 1970s ;-) )

So I reckon ask around and you might get lucky

I had the same issue, and took my one key into DB Marine at Cookham my nearest Volvo dealer, who in a couple of days obtained spare keys at £9.36 plus VAT each.

Cheers guys - Unfortunately no Volvo dealer within 100+ miles of me, so gonna try the locksmith

Blanks are about £22 ish. Just call any Volvo dealer and they should have them is stock. Take that to any locksmith and they will cut a new one for you. I have tried all sorts over the years to "copy" volvo keys but with very little success..

You have to look around but some locksmiths do have blanks that work.
took me 3 tries to find one but now use them as main keys no probs.

Re: Can a \'normal\' locksmith copy a Volvo key?

Cheers for the info guys, appreciated as always!

indeed. I am currently about to do the same having been fobbed off by the local locksmith this last Saturday, so good info :encouragement:

When the locksmith cannot identify the Volvo blank tell them it comes under 'Plant Equipment'.
Having found that my local locksmith charged £2 a key. He had to get some blanks in first though.
