can a navman depthsounder be mounted inside the hull like nasa?
i dont want to drill a hole.

thoughts?

I suspect it depends on the hull type and thickness. Through hulls dont like cored material, but are quite happy with thin GRP. The steeper the angle of the inside, the thicker the GRP it is trying to go through! and you need to get it vertical.

Hi Talbot,

I hope you are well.
I think you have the wrong end of the stick, dont think I explained myself well.
I want to fit a navman depth sounder but don’t want to cut a hole in my boat.
Ie could I just epoxy the sensor to the hull?
The boat is balsa cored.

Don't think it will work through a sandwich construction, I epoxied mine into the hole cut through both laminates and the foam, no problems yet and it's been in 12 years

easy one for a change - NO.

choices -

cut through inner hull and core, clean area of outer hull and install as suggested by talbot above - then reseal edges of core, fill around transducer with foam or sikaflex then seal over the whole thing to keep water out of core.

as above to start but install a tube large enough to take transducer, seal to both inner and out hulls to keep core watertight then fill with mineral oil, or fresh water + antifreeze and drop in transducer

install through hull properly

transom mount externally (may not suit and messy wire etc

all the best

Perhaps you had better read it again, it clearly states that in-hull systems have a problem with a cored hull.
