I took a pal of mine with his very pregnant wife from Portsmouth to Cowes for lunch yesterday and because I am on a swinging mooring down the river I decided it was safer to let them embark at Camper while I was refueling. I always fuel up there and occasionally stop there to eat at the Castle, putting a pound or so in the charity bottle for the privelage.
They went MAD, this is a private marina not a public getty!! Is that fare? What should I have done? (I put them ashore at Haslar after having a drink on the green boat) Mel.

IT may be a private marina, but if you were buying fuel there, it seems a little heavy handed of them, maybe a letter to somebody in authority may be required.

Seems out of character, but the fuel berth was very busy yesterday. Suggest you take it up with Peter Wright.

We would like to make the following points on the message posted by Whiskey2

1) The vessel was moored illegally, in an admiralty channel, and when asked to move there were insufficient crew on board to move the vessel, which could have been damaged by tugs using the MOD fuelling jetty. Other than for fuelling, we are prohibited from using the seaward side of the floating breakwater (except in emergencies or with special approval from QHM Portsmouth).
2) Asking permission always helps and reduces the possibility of friction and misunderstanding.
3) Using the Castle Tavern in the town does not warrant a free berth in a private marina.
4) We are always happy to assist any yachtsman wishing a short stay visit, provided they extend us the courtesy of contacting us. Charges are always dependant on length of stay and the individual circumstances of each case.
5) We always prefer any complaint about our marina to be directed, in the first instance, to our manager and not to be posted on a public forum. In this particular case, no approach was made to our manager.

as is their response below.

That to me is a decidedly snappy and rather brusque post.

Whiskey2 obviously didn't follow reglations (out of ignorance rather than deliberately)

I think telling the forum of his experience is justifiable. He wasn't making an official complaint, nor bad mouthing Camper Nic. at least not to my reading of. He just said he was yelled off a private jetty. I am sure that's happened to more than one of us in various circumstances, usually because the jetty isn't marked well or at all..

And if you are taking on fuel, one would normally expect a little give and take.

Seems to me that communication is the "quay" (pun intended). Whiskey2 should have warned CN of his intentions and they should have been a little more diplomatic about telling him the rules for using the jetty. CN's posting in here has a real sting to it that smacks of defensiveness. . at least in my view...

Fair play to CN...point 2 is the point to remember though...I've found most marinas obliging if you just ask...either poping into the marina office and asking beforehand, or by VHF or mobile. They'll give you an end of a finger to moor for 5 mins or so to sort yourselves out then off you go...

I was getting onto a boat in Plymouth went to the office of QAB they said not a problem, no fee "happy to help sir", in the end we stopped and went for lunch and paid for a short stay £5 for (4 hours) less than some carparks

It would be out of order to park your car in a farmers field while you use the nextdoor pub, so why do some water users think they can get away with it on the wet stuff??

Leaving a boat on a fuel berth is a bit inconsiderate IMHO, it stops other yachts, be they power or sail, from using the marina facilities, whether they are residents or not. There aren't too many places in Portsmouth to refuel to begin with

Like the road there are some that will park on double yellow line or private property...look on the bright side, at least you didn't get clamped! :)

Thanks for the reply Pete in my opinion this is the correct forum for this and I was not making a "complaint" as such. I asked in my origional post "what should I have done" meaning where else could I have embarked the pregnant lady?
I said I was sorry at the time for not contacting them by radio, my mistake. I stopped just short of the fuel bay so as not to block it! After we were made unwelcome I just left and picked up fuel in Cowes.
Thanks again for your comments I now know what to do. :)
