This weekend I was thinking (again) of going up the Tamar with Tigger and stop at Calstock. Tigger draws 1.8m. Any advice on where we could stay? Is it possible/advisable/allowed to anchor near the railway bridge? Any moorings one may borrow for a couple of tides?

We might go to Morwellan with the dinghy and visit the museum with Celia (6). Anything else worth a visit (from the river)?
 
A few points-

There is a low cable across the river just above Cargreen, (16m IIRC). It's too low for us.

No use going to Morwellham - they've gone bust.

You can still use the visitor's moorings outside the Spaniards at Cargreen even though the pub has shut.

Thanks Snowy. Gosh, this is sad news: Morwellham bust, pubs closed... is this the recession? Anything else I might take the young family out to if the weather is iffy?
 
You could pick up a mooring from Warren at the boatyard there, but isn't this weekend coming up to Springs again? (Guessing cos I can't find the tide tables) I've been on a couple of the boatyard's moorings and touched the bottom at LW springs before, and I draw 1.12m only.
 
Morwellham always had a derelict air witht he feeling that it would be nice when the restoration was finished. It's also a bit out-of-the-way so it never had much in the way of visitor numbers.

The Spaniards is a different story. The owner has wanted to close the pub for a long time. He was refused permission for housing so has turned it into a 'wedding venue'. Maybe it will pay better than the pub or maybe it means a couple of days work a week for the same income.

It's a great shame because there is a real dearth of pubs you can moor outside in this area.

THE SPANIARDS IS SHUT**** !!!! The world is at an end!! I was looking forward to a pint there this summer.... And Morwelham have gone bust too.... Blimey... A lot has changed since I left Bere Alston in 1976.....
 
Still getting over the shock of the Spaniards.... What about the other one in the er somthing or other lake.... Go to Mylor and turn left into a shallow water lake and its on the left bank...

The Plough has improved since then - except for now being called the "Olde Plough"!

I laid up my old boat in the dock at Morwellham a number of winters. At least one of the Trust's directors was concerned about their over-optimism for the future when they got grants from the Heritage Lottery fund for CAPITAL expenditure - as I understand it they promptly sacked him.

When I last looked on the local council's website it appeared that the owner of the Spaniards was trying to blackmail the planning authority by saying he would consider re-opening the pub at some point in the future if they would grant permision for the holiday homes. I think most local councils react adversly to such pressure so it looks like it will stay closed:(. There are however Cargreen residents on this forum who will know much more than me about that - I suspect no news is bad news here.

On Tigger's original question there is also a good anchorage just below Cotehele going into the bend. Nice walks around there up to the Mill, and through the woods above the river into Calstock itself or up Danescombe past the old mine buildings.

I will be pleased to see anyone landing on Cotehele Quay in the Information Centre between 11.00 and 16.00 this Sunday. The Edgcumbe Arms tea rooms will be open and the ice cream kiosk might well be too. There are toilets on The Quay. It is our last day of the 2009 season.
Find the deep water as suggested just down from The Quay, but if you can dry out you are welcome to lie alongside near to the hand crane. There is no charge, but a donation in the Discovery Centre box would be appreciated by the Trust.
The Tamar Barge "Shamrock" is now out of the water so her mooring might be available giving you a good opportunity to do some secondary port tidal calculations! Info is on the Easy Tide website.
All the above are open to non NT members, but you will need a NT membership card or to buy a ticket to visit the House and gardens or the Water Mill.
 
Morwellham Quay closure

I understand that today is the last day that Morwellham Quay museums are open to the public. The administrators are closing it for at least the winter while its future is decided.

Morwellham has been closed for a couple of weeks already according to disappointed visitors who have found it so.
Further to my earlier invitation to Cotehele Quay I will not be there if the weather forecast lives up to its promise, although there is now a hint that the ruff stuff might have passed through this part of Cornwall by Sunday afternoon.
 
Went to Morwellan Quay earlier this week - for the first time and only by car. Yes all closed up, but still plenty to see of interest - sad to see the timbers of the ketch pouring out water at low tide. Sad that the enterprise can no longer be subsidised - but after the biggest boom and the biggest bust of all time what can one expect?

Yes the Pandora Inn in Restronguet creek, just above Mylor is still in business during pub hours and serving meals, even over the winter, every day from 12:00pm til 9:00pm.
