Calshot spit used to have a proper lightship.
Then it became a large buoy but was still a “ship” - it had an anchor ball and an anchor light in addition to the navigation light. And the ball always faced into the tidal flow.

It’s now changed to a normal port hand lateral buoy. I must have missed a NTM. Anyone know why?

I noticed that going out to the start for Round the Island. The bouy has no name marking on it so I assumed its a temporary while the light float is serviced. Its a useful guide to the end of the spit so changing its shape made it no different to the other red cans along there.

The temporary buoy is marked “Calshot spit”. You need to be close to see it. Having lost my bearings when I didn’t see the usual catamaran based buoy, I went in close to have a look. Thank goodness it’s only away for maintenance as having the distinctive buoy is very useful.
