Calorifier installation help needed

I intend removing the Palermo hot water heater (from my centre cockpit 1979 Moody 36) and installing a calorifier into the pressurised hot water system.

Is there a web site or similar that can help me or I would be grateful for advice - information.

The engine is a 35hp Thornycroft with a heat exchanger. Very little room in the engine compartment and a real pain / struggle to work in.

I intend placing the calorifier in the same place in the galley as the old palermo. Is the run to/from the engine signifigent? Where do I tap into the heat exchaner circuit? Which models are best? etc etc

All depends on size.

In principle, installation is straightforward.

Contact ECS (directly or through a retail outlet), they are very helpful. Insist on an expansion bottle, otherwise every time the calorifier contents expand, the excess will escape through the pressure release valve and the water you want to keep will end up with the water you didn't want in first place in the bilge.

I went to <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.cleghorn.co.uk>Cleghorn Waring</A> for the parts for my system, who I can recommend: good advice and fast spare parts service, large range of C-Warm (copper) and Seaward (aluminium) calorifiers. Like you, for me it was a case of the largest calorifier we could fit in: a 20 litre model as it turned out, which has proved entirely adequate.

I've been a bit concerned that with long pipe runs to and from the engine to the calorifier, the engine tends to run rather cooler than it did. I would be interested in other people's experience on this point. With a long run too, the risk of some line fault resulting in the engine cooling water being dumped is increased - as has happened to me. A spare pipe is essential. Quite apart from overheating the engine, the water coming out is scalding hot, you don't want it going in the wrong places.

Many thanks for the info - 95% solved now - Just would like to know how you T into the cooling system? And how far apart in and out should be?

"calorifier in the galley"...I thought the engine header tank had to be higher than the calorifier too prime the system?

Hi Michael, I also have a Moody 36 CC and have always understood that a calorifier goes in the lower RH side of the cockpit locker as the space was designed for that purpose. It will take a fairly large tank, with the advantage of being very close to the engine. Regards, Tony

Tony hi,

Mine is an old Angus Primrose 36 but I was wondering where to place it when I read it had to be lower than the engine cooling system - But you are right - there is a space in the lower part of the aft locker and it is beside the engine and lower thant the fw cooling system. Thanks for the advice and the height advice as well.

ECS supply a mixer valve to mix cold with heated. This avoides losing too much hot water.

Another consideration is that if you have a long feed (e.g. to the heads) crew will run the water until it is sufficiently hot for their purpose. That can lead to a lot of wasted fresh water.

My solution is to have an electrically operated bypass valve that returns the water deemed insufficiently hot to the calorifier input. You need a bit of pipe exposed somewhere in the heads so that you can hand-sense its temperature to decide when to stop diverting.
