Calorifier \"hot then cold\"

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas for what might be wrong with my calorifier on my yacht -
When I run the tap it goes hot like normal but then goes cold with 5 secs; i then keep running the tap and goes hot again and then cold; this just keeps repeating itself.
I have drained and then refilled but seems to be the same again - Someone has said that they think it could be an airlock but I am not sure as I have drained which I thought would purge the system.
Any help
Thanks

Re: Calorifier \"hot then cold\"

are you certain that the tap is drawing from the outflow of the calorifier ? If you can only draw about a litre, it may be that particular tap strikes off from a point away from the outflow.

Re: Calorifier \"hot then cold\"

thanks for the response; I have never changed the configuration of the installation. It is the same as when I purchased the boat new - thanks

Re: Calorifier \"hot then cold\"

Do you a thermostat controlled mixer that adds cold water to the hot coming from the calorifier to prevent scalding. If that is opening and closing improperly it could be causing the problem. Mine is screwed into the exit from the calorifier and has a cold water feed teed off the feed into the calorifier. So its easy to find.

Re: Calorifier \"hot then cold\"

The Albion system, along with some others, has a blending valve in the line. If your system has one then that is where the problem could be.

Re: Calorifier \"hot then cold\"

Thanks for the response - I do have a thermostat tap on the calorifier that I can turn to change the temperature - I am wondering if I can buy a replacement part to make this work better and see if this is the problem - thanks again for the idea

Re: Calorifier \"hot then cold\"

I agree it could well be the blender sticking. If you have an accumulator (or two) in the system and a pressure-switched pump then there's another possibility: does the change in temperature synchronise with the switching of the water pump? If so, then it may be that you have an accumulator that needs re-pressurising.

Re: Calorifier \"hot then cold\"

I know people wont agree but why not chuck it away, never had one fitted and got no intention of fitting one. OK the water gets hot but never had a prob. just something else to go wrong.
