Being a donkey as I am, the "higher ups" loaded a straw which broke my back today, hence I am looking for alternative employment. I haven't quit yet, but it was close!!

So, I'm calling on you guys and gals to keep your ears to the ground for any "IT manager/team leader" type jobs please. Preferably in hampshire or neighbouring counties.

Thanks people, PM me if you hear anything and I'll mail you a CV!

No particular leads but there are usually plenty of jobs on this site. Needs a bit of sifting but can be worth the effort.
Best of luck

I believe that most of the council IT departments are usually looking for staff, especially those who can add up to 20 without taking their socks off, but the pay is probably not quite what you're used to. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Re: Calling up all you \"Old Boys\" in the Network..

if past responses to threads like this are anything to go by, 50% of the users of this forum are IT or ex-IT people so here must be a good place to ask about the state of the industry.

i put up with 6 months of ir35 thievery then headed off into the wide blue. when i came back i discovered that the industry had been destroyed in my absence (though i had always suspected that they couldn't get on without me).

so, for those of you still in the business - are things looking up and is the prospect of an end to ir35 restoring hope?

Re: Calling up all you \"Old Boys\" in the Network..

You have my sympathies as one who does it in the Auto industry. I am afraid there is rife cost cutting and certainly a dearth of work that pays. Everyone is playing bash the consultant (rich people one and all so THEY say). I had 7 weeks out last year for the first time since 1992.
IR35 is being retained so we think, but they will add IR591. This has the benficial effect of increasing the available numbers of protagonists to the Inland Revenue, and thus makes us one man operations:
a) a lot less visible with all the noise on the radar from increased traffic
b) a lot less likely as targets because we aint worht the enormous effort
c) a lot less likely because they arent increasing the SWAT teams avaiable to the IR to come and get us.
I agree that there is work in the local NHS PCTs (my mates are in there in strength) but the pay is risible now.
Dont get depressed. I did loads of sailing/motorcycling etc while I was off.

Very best of luck

Jim
PS I got fired yesterday, and then rehired on a different project. At 10% less. Ho Hum.

Re: Calling up all you \"Old Boys\" in the Network..

as someone who works in an IT company and is responsible for recruitment (in Scotland so not much use in this context) the difference in the market between now and three years ago is quite unbelievable - we were continually losing staff to headhunters but no more - they never leave now even if we wanted them to!! WWhen we put adverts out for people the number of responses is depressingly large

Am quite certain though that the market in Scotland will be different to down south

We are doing work with umbrella companies though and they say they are as busy as ever

Not just IT Consultants that get caught by that wonderful peice of legislation IR35. I "work" in the defence area, and have also been hammered by IR*****35. However, much less opportunity to disappear off to pastures new.

Re: Calling up all you \"Old Boys\" in the Network..

Simple Answer : Gordon Brown's method for screwing self employed contractors and consultants.

Longer Answer: An Inland Revenue proposal which was put into the budget in 2001, to limit how independant contractors and consultants can pay themselves, and how they pay tax and NI accordingly. The theory is that it ensures everybody pays the right NI for their income. However it neglects that we also have to pay employer's NI, as well as employees, but we don't get any real benefits of an employee. eg sick pay, redundancy, etc etc etc.

Some people will say we are just whinging, but I still see it is getting screwed by Gordon Brown.

Re: Calling up all you \"Old Boys\" in the Network..

Labour 'support small businesses'

that means businesses that are small and stay that way. the thing that gets them really riled is success. ir35 is a way of taxing successful entrepreneurs at 55%.

At the moment I don't think he's spotted me, though I do have the pleasure of paying income tax a year in advance, still trying to convince customers that it's a good idea.

Re: Calling up all you \"Old Boys\" in the Network..

A combination of IR35 and the dot thingy going pop, nit to mention Our Tone's government bringing in cheap foreign contractors, all but killed the contracting market. It still looks pretty flat though if you're willing to adapt and be flexible you might find something. After 7 years of contracting, it gave me up, but I've found a part-time job at a local school running their network. The money's terrible but guess who's got the time for a planned 5 week cruise this summer ?

Talbot,
this is so depressing that I can just manage a line or two.
IR35 is Gordon Browns way of saying - You are an employee because the form you consult to give you a desk and a telephone for conveniance. No holiday, Sick Pay, Pension etc, but he then wants you to pay Tax as an employee, only recognising 5% max of your turnover to run your Company. No recognition that you dont get notice most of the time, and you are very disposable.
Iniquitous, Pernicious T*at.
