In the Uk we have the various CG along the south coast (and Jersey, I guess), and you call the sort-of local one to your location.
How does it work from . say, Normandy round to Roscoff.. what are the various CGs in France?

Cross Jobourg near Cap de la Hague do Casquets TSS and surrounding waters, CROSS Corsen do Brittany and around the corner.

Google CROSS for more info.

Also semaphore stations at Carteret and Granville who are manned by navy personnel, not sure if there are more On Brittany coast.

Cross Corsen are on the Brest peninsular and cover north Brittany and round the corner and Cross Joburg cover East Cotentin Peninsular and I assume at least past Le Havre.

There seem to be Semaphore stations I have seen at Carteret, Granville, I think at Cancale, St Cast and regularly spaced along the coast line between the Cross stations although it seems its the Cross stations who coordinate SAR.

My only comment would be it would be usefull if they put out messages in english as well as French because offshore in the bay of St Malo a motorboat that can quickly get to the aid of a casualty is more likely to be English speaking than French. My french is ok but they talk so quickly you only get the lat and miss the long in a message.

And in English, what is the call "Cross Corsen", for example, or ...??

And in English, what is the call "Cross Corsen"

Oui. :)

Two observations.

They can speak English. Despite the French not liking it, it is still the International language.

If your French is 'ok' like mine it can often be an error to start off speaking it in official circumstances as it is likely they will come back to you in fast French way beyond your/my capability and you WILL get lost.

Ha, yea I make that mistake coming into harbour.. after a few minutes of total confusion all round, I usually then ask if they speak English since clearly their French isnt very good. ;)

You could still use Jersey or Guernsey CG, they're always happy to help. If they're out of range on arrival or departure you can still telephone them. Also they have a good working relationship with CROSS if their services happen to be required.
