When our boat was dismasted in the Solent prior to delivery to Caledonia, someone stole the radio aerial. We had a new one fitted prior to this season and I have received and made calls from and to other vessels. For some reason however we had never heard the All ships weather and safety notices from Liverpool coastguard - being based in the Solway.

When we took her up to the Clyde last week I bought a hand held radio to be sure of getting the necessary bulletins, but on arrival at Roseneath we cleaned the deck contacts and requested a radio check from Clyde Coastguard.

Your signal is strong and clear was the reply.

Yippee - won't have to buy a new radio. Went for our first cruise at the weekend and despite listening out for some reports - heard nothing other than smatterings of chat from other vessels, but no safety notices except on the hand held. Having resigned myself (again) to having to invest in a new radio I was somewhat non-plussed as we passed the Cloch on our way back to Roseneath to hear the dulcit tones of a lassie singing out 'All Ships .. here are the notices blah blah' - full weather forecast and maritime information.

Any explanations will be welcomed and pursued when next at the boat.
