Calling Marinas

I read Peppermints post and began to wonder - why should you call a marina to ask if its ok to come in and where should we go?
There are monthly posts about marina charges and of course as an occasional overnight user I get to pay at the highest rates.
You wouldn't phone a multi-story and ask if its ok to park - you enter and then find a berth. As marinas nearly all have signs indicating which are visitor berths, I think from here on in we should all just go in and park then wait for them to come and collect their money. This would put customers in the driving seat and should make us feel that marinas are doing something towards earning their crusts
And don't give me that nonsense about other boats manoevring and we have to wait for instructions - cars go faster than boats and can inflict plenty of damage - just do it.
This would be an excellent way of cutting down on vhf calls and would stop Peppermint from making an eejit of himself as he forgets to press the right buttons

I think it must be a different world where you are, we are not so lucky!

Most French marinas have dedicated visitors berths, even visitors marinas, but on the South Coast there is such a high demand for berths that nearly all visitors are allocated to berths that are only temporarily vacant. Some berths may also be unsuitable for all sizes and types, the universal one size fits all berth doesn't exist if you are trying to fit a 45ft deep keeled visitor into a berth used by a 26ft shallow draught boat.

As for the VHF calls, these should be direct on 37 or 80 and not on Ch16 anyway.

Personally, I think that there isn't enough excitement in Fleetwood now that the fishing fleet has all but gone. My strategy for re-invigoration is to never call up and listen until someone asks if its OK to go out then proceed at full speed in. If I can find a berth where someone has left fenders and bits of string I always go there as it saves using mine and whilst they are sometimes too long, this is seldom a problem with my sharp knife to cut them down a bit so that they fit nicely

The lack of clearance under the boat is precisely my problem. One afternoon crouched under there crippled me next day. I've come to the conclusion, sadly, that the years have taken their toll.
