Greetings all,

Watched the five minutes on BBC 2 last night that was what appears to be our sailing allocation.

Of the five minutes, we had about twenty seconds of Ben creaming along and about five seconds of the girls in the Yngling doing their bit. The rest was dull waffle.

As two nations that in my mind take their sailing seriously how is the coverage in Australia and New Zealand?

Dissapointed here!

regards
Cameron

On the Beeb TV yesterday afternoon they aired the Aussie commentary of the mens fencing final.... absolutely hilarious.... maybe they should just plug into the Aussie commentators and send ours home...much more interesting

This is on a 13:00 daily for about 1-2 hours on BBC 2 digital. Great presentation. Thrilling pics. Even SWMBOB is interested and she is not too keen on sailing.

So well filmed that suddenly Yacht Racing becomes a very televisual sport. Far better than football

Well here in NZ the coverage of sailing is zero as far as I have seen for video. As far as studio commentary is concerned from NZ's own TV commentators both in Athens and here in NZ, the coverage is almost non existant. See many hours each day of cyclists, horses, swimmers, a bit of rowing (mainly just when the crew fell out of the boat), etc but have to rely on the Yachting NZ and the Olympic internet sites to get the sailing places and news.

As John (Mainlysteam) says video coverage here is negligible and if there is any it's not easy to find. Sailing gets a few seconds verbal update in the radio bulletins but that's it. In fact the longest coverage was this morning when the NZ sailing coach was complaining that today's race shouldn't have gone ahead because the wind was "too shifty", whatever the hell that means - given the normal conditions here in NZ I'd have thought that kiwis would have a big advantage over most others under "shifty" conditions'! Didn't catch where NZ finished but presumably not 1st place.

Funny thing about shifty conditions....they do indeed sometimes lead to winners. Back in the early days of hang gliding, mainland Europeans and Americans were used to jumping off high mountains (eg the Alps) from which they could take a leisurely 30 minute trip to the bottom. Here in the UK, we used to jump off little hills, then use every available bit of lift to stay up for half an hour. Things were a bit basic then. As a result, UK used to win just about every major hang gliding event going, as we were used to fighting to stay in the air.

Things have changed now of course.

Its all "wall to wall" Olympics on many networks..but I havent seen very much sailing.. saw swimming ,shooting ,cross country riding ( our bloke ,after winning the last 4 gold mdals ...fell off ), beach volley ball ( loved the Cuban girls !!!!!) and tons of other sports one would not normally watch.. so much so that I am sick of it ., hence I may have missed any sailing that was shown..
BrianJ ( do know we have a swag of medalls . )
