Having found the dynastart on my newly acquired Sabb HG 8hp unserviacable I am now trying to start the engine to see if it's worth spending any money on it.
Got fuel pulsing to the injector, squirted oil down the tube and almost given myself a multiple strain injuries hand cranking. Compression seems ok for an 8hp engine.

Anyone got any ideas where i should start looking for the issue?

If I can't start it by hand and have it running I'm not going to go out and get a dynastart and regulator. Would be nice to get it running to save the hassle of lifting a new engine in.

On that note, if i do swap out the engine, anyone know what a least fuss option would be re engine bed adjustments that doesn't involve another Sabb?

Have a chat with these guys ... friendly and very knowledgeable and with good English language skill as well ... made engines since 1925(ish) and still used in lifeboats all over the world...

Sabb H

Also, when cranking the engine are you cranking with compression or without (turn leaver on top of cylinder 90 degrees ? ..

Normal operation is to crank with compression leaver open, build up speed, then throw the leaver to engage compression and thus ignition ...

yeah, cranking ok. had plenty of boarding boats that were hand crank only but all were listers and more familiar with their quirks. Only ever had one other Sabb but only ever had to change the starter on that.

Another good source ..

Sabb - Sleeman and Hawken

From my recollection, give the engine fuel, air and keep lubrication, then they keep going... I've only worked on two Sabb's and both were simple and never caused any real issue. One was slow starting and needed more speed on the cranking to get it swung over 3 compression strokes (after throwing the compression switch) before firing...

Sleemans is just down the road and just spoke to them, they have put me onto a good sabb guy.

Was getting plenty of speed cranking and kept going as long as i could after turning the decompression lever.
Engine couldn't be more simple. hope it gets going, really don't want the hassle of a re-engine. but if someone wants to give me a slightly bigger running engine i'd probably be happy to work up a sweat changing it.

If Injector is fuelling, you should probably not need to remove .... are you starting with wide open throttle (full fuel) ? as that is a pre-requisite apparently ... (Norwegian language here)

So;

1) Full Fuel (Wide open throttle)
2) Lift valves
3) Crank and throw valve lift when cranked to speed
4) Throttle back ...

all i know is the fuel is pulsing up to the injector, no idea if the injector is blocked, that's why i'd like to get it out.
