Calling all pipe fitters.

Hi Michael W.
I stand corrected sir!
As I said at the top of my post.Do not do this!
...And followed up with remark re advisability of using a professional when working up stream, considerations regarding safety and validity of house insurance!
Are you serious that Fairy Liquid will attack steel pipework? And that using a naked flame to purge gas is perhaps not a good idea?
I am sure the poster will have called in a professional after reading that lot(and thats a good thing)!

Neat Fairy Liquid, ignoring any claim that it may cause rust, is too thick to test efftively for gas leaks. When I worked in the Gas Industry we tended to use a diluted washing up liquid, similar in consistency to childrens bubble blowing liquid, because the bubbles form more easily.
As to attacking steel pipework?... there is more than enough moisture in the atmosphere to attack steel pipework anyway.
Having followed this thread I am sure that if the originator is not a 'competent' person then he would not even think of doing it himself. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanyou for being honest enough to conceed that the Gas Regs do indeed allow any 'competent person' to carry out work on their OWN installation.

I, as a Chartered Electrical Engineer who used to do household electrical jobs as a sideline, am just as frustrated as you by the 'new' Part P regs. Again though, I technically CAN do work to my own property.

The catch in both instances is that (for all gas and many electrical) I must obtain a Building Regs inspection at considerable cost. This is what I object to.

IMHO in both cases it is a Trade Association stitch-up.

Yes Vic but theres a sting in the tail, you see the health and safety definition of a “competent person” is someone who is registered with a recognised body, and guess who that body is. For you to think you are competent is not enough, I n fact if you believe you are then you can write to the health and safety and they will make a one off decision, in other words you need their written permission.

I, like Michael have spent a lot of time and a lot of money going through the registration process, I also employ fitters that I have to put through, so let me spell it out,

DIY on any gas fitting is against the law, and it is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE which carries a jail sentence.
End of story

Strangely this does not apply to gas work on your boat, where DIY is still allowed but not recommended.
