Are you a forum addict? Imagine for a serious moment that the forum disappeared without warning? What kind of void would it leave in your life? How would you cope? Would you go cold turkey? What would the withdrawal symptoms be? How long would it last? And what would you eventually replace it with? Ignore the fact that some of the regulars are in email contact and even meet quite often in the real world. But for the rest of the 'virtual' crew how would it be?

I'm prompted to write after the recent 'sting' operation by tcm and co. to flush out the murky Mirabella character. I know some people found it clever and hilarious. Others a waste of time. I thought it was vintage tcm (in a positive sense)!

But whatever your views, the sheer amount of time and emotional energy that went into it are undeniable. And it struck me that when folk get THAT involved in something, it's really got under their skin. In which case the forum seems to be much more than a virtual bar - it's become a way of life?

Darn Rob
I just love this forum. I move about my office doing this and that and the first thing I do when I get back my desk is check out the latest posts. i love the humour, the info and the occasional hi-jinks. During a working day it can be great being in contact with a bunch of folk with a common interest. Long may it continue. Dont know how I would cope if it stopped

Regards to all
Cameron

Getting a life

Some of the recent posts have made me think that I need to get a proper life.
This is probably the wrong place to ask, but has any forumite had any experience in getting one?

Re: Getting a life

I've tried this thing called 'working life'. Very over rated and I find myself constantly distracted and now addicted to 'forum life'.
Apparently there is something called 'personal life' but this seems to be very short in time and constantly features a woman and two boys who seem to want take up a huge chunk of it.
A sub section of personal life' is 'sailing life' and although desirable and enjoyable seems not to last very long and then you have to return to 'working life'.

And then I get distracted again....

Re: Getting a life

you cd try ebay?

For myself, if the forum didn't exist, I definitely wouldn't post on it. yeah, i';d enjoy all thhe extra time, like when the telly peeps went on strike years ago. n fact, i was looking forward to getting banned from driving so i cd use the bike but then the blimmni lawyer got me off. So, kim's to blame, really, not me. I'm a victim, and am planning to hire a clever lawyer to sue ybw for wasting my time.

Re: Getting a life

Yes, i've also heard something about this thing called a 'personal life'....can someone define it?? nah joking, this forum is an interesting end to boredom in lectures. I learn alot of good stuff, but then again, I pick up a fair amount of junk too

As somebody who lives on thier own and works from home I find this a great way to break the day up. Some days it seems that I am infact breaking my forums time up with work breaks /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

OK, you can send me that "sad man" award now...

Jeff.

How many forums are you on?

Couldn't cope with work otherwise. But really, you are all not only on this one forum are you?
I myself are on two Swedish ones, this one and an American one (good for having ready posts to read when starting work in the morning...) Also less frequently I look into uk.rec.sailing and swnet.fritid.segling... oh well.

The only place I can live without the forum(s) is on the boat. :)

How dare you call me an addict! All I do is .........er.... What is it exactly....er...well...... It started innocently enough.... All I did was answer a couple of questions about things....Thought I was helping out really....Then I started reading all this stuff about Fray Bentos... And then I got really annoyed at some pillock leading on at me good mate the QHM and went all Victor Meldrew.... But I can give it up whenever I like..... In any case its all the falt o' they Scottish boogers hae'n stupid chunter we' one anoe'r en makin ev'n else talk lik Rab C Nesbit n things.... Nae ma falt.... Oh S.....

It seems to me that there are two distinct categories (with an infinitely variable spectrum of humanity between them, of course).

I am one of those who visits the forum at work, ostensibly as a break from the overbearing madness but probably as an excuse for not doing something else that I really ought to be getting on with. Especially on a Friday afternoon after lunchtime in the pub. In other words it's the forum, or work.

The other majority do it from home, for whom it is (I presume) it is the forum, or the rest of life. Then there's those for whom it's both, neither or something else entirely.

The only thing we all have in common, apart from a slight madness, is that the forum comes second to sailing, or at least our boats. Which is why it all goes quiet at the weekend, except for those poor wee souls whose boat is out of the water (or sold, or not yet bought).

well- my forum experience reminds me of something- when my children were little, I did loads of coffee mornings and womens groups etc- spent some time talking about kids/babies (=boats)and a lot of time gossiping about people I only knew by hearsay (=forumites)-so therefore-is the forum a glorified mothers meeting? Discuss.

If you get a PC instead of apple it wont crash--and you be able to reinstall your soft ware as long as you still have the reg codes they sent? otherwise you will have to email them-normaly theres no problem--not even if your reinstalling on a new machine
