Calling all 'crats, techno, electro, intellectual, regarding inverters

Re: Calling all \'crats, techno, electro, intellectual, regarding inver

Boy o boy! There are more sparks coming out of these postings than you'll ever get from your inverter...

Re: Calling all \'crats, techno, electro, intellectual, regarding inver

What was wrong with my post? Was it incorrect? Was it abusive?????

The power is 1500 watts = you don't need to calculate it. The amps go up as the volts go down.

[/ QUOTE ]I know that. Rather more than you realise.

What I don't know is why you make patronising posts, and perhaps you'd still like to explain your reference to ohms law and 12 year olds?

This forum sometimes reminds me of an old boss of mine who was elevated to the House of Lords. He remarked that whatever one thought of the place, invariably there was someone who was a world authority on the subject close at hand.

I have never met someone who spoke with authority claiming that they had a degree that would burn your brains out. Either I've never met anyone clever or knowledgable or...?

What's everybody getting hot under the collar about, simple question, even simpler answer.

[/ QUOTE ]I agree - simple question and simple answer.

I normally try not to get involved in slanging matches - but I got cross about a silly post and rose to the bait. I will take my tablets and retreat.

Re: Calling all \'crats, techno, electro, intellectual, regarding inver

Thank you. I read all of your post, and it is exactly what I wanted to know.

Thank you to all you others too. There is an obvious consensus that we buy a switch like the one we have now to keep the shore and gen supplies separate. HWMBO showed me a similar switch with the extra position to accomodate the inverter. I will authorise it's purchase!

The inverter is a Mobitronic, the same make as the battery chargers we have, which have been very good. I am now slightly concerned about running the electric feed pump from the inverter. We got the inverter for £250, but a pure sine wave one of this power would be VERY expensive, I believe. I don't really want to ruin the watermaker feed pump; I spent rather a lot of my summer cruise getting the watermaker leak-proof. It had plastic connections, all of which leaked, and one exploded after I had re-made the joint with obvously too much ptfe tape! And I did it incase HWMBO overtightened them. I have weaker hands than he has. And some arthritis too. But watermaker water is very nice to use, provided you keep away from other yachts who use sea toilets!

Oh Poo.

Better not moor along side me then (especially after a good "Ruby Murray" followed by the obligatory J. Arthur Wright) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Calling all \'crats, techno, electro, intellectual, regarding inver

The inverter is a Mobitronic

Waeco maintain that the larger >1000W versions of that range (meaning the non pure sinewave ones) which I think is now discontinued, have automatic internal switching to external AC when that is applied - is fairly common on larger inverters. If that is so with your unit, then you do not need an external switch - the manual should make it clear exactly what is required (but if so, and as others say, don't mix up shore and inverter AC on the inverter's output side).

As far as I know, these are modified (aka "quasi") sine wave units (there is also a sine wave range), not unmodified square wave, (again the manual should make it clear) so you should have no problems driving a 230 volt motor. If concerned about the motor I would just suck it and see, it is not going to suddenly blow up when you first switch it on. See if it makes any unhappy noises or gets hotter than usual.

Re: Calling all \'crats, techno, electro, intellectual, regarding inver

Sorry I am late and missed all the fun, been on the boat.

I also have a similar watermaker that runs off a 750W motor and have a mastervolt 1200 (not sine wave) inverter. They definitely do not get along well. Even with no load. However, the inverter is fine with all other equipment (even the microwave).

In general motors in fridges and watermakers are a pain for non-sine inverters. I would love to know how you get on and if the watermaker performs at full output. Also look at the protection and earthing especially around water makers.

You said "sea toilets" were your fear. The bigger worry is bilge pumps putting out oil, especially if the owner has added detergent to disperse it. It ruins the watermaker membranes.

Re: charging mobiles

I was referring to the mains charger plugged into a cheapo inverter - should have used a car charger (12v) but didn't have one (still don't)

Re: Calling all \'crats, techno, electro, intellectual, regarding inver

Becky - just one thing to add to this. I have a Heart 2500W Marine inverter. If it detects incoming mains voltage, the inverter is automatically shut down. Yours might already have this capabilty too - could be worth checking out. Incidently, the Heart inverter instruction manual is pretty comprehensive so might be worth a read to understand a bit more about inverters. Good luck. Nigel

Sorry ccscott, my remark was not directed at you at all but at those 'sparks' doing just that ealier in the thread. Somehow I tagged it on to yours as the last post.
