Calculating Fuel Consumption

Fwiw, I'd definitely go for the unknown devil, if given such choice.
I guess the SL is the MTU 2000 powered vessel for which you asked about those engines?
The F630 was only built with MAN IIRC, and I wouldn't be so keen on them, at the size/vintage of F630...

Yes true the 630 was only offered with the MAN V10 and V12 diesels. The boat I'm looking at has the V12s with about 600hrs. These engines are fitted in lots of planing boats around this size but I'm interested to hear why you would not be keen on them compared to the MTU V8 diesels? MTUs seem to have a good reputation generally and MAN possibly a not so good reputation but I haven't yet found a specific reason why the V12s are not liked. Instinctively of course, a V8 sounds like simpler more easily maintained engine than a V12 but what do I know!

Well, I never had a boat with either of those engines, if that*s what you're asking.
But I did hear reports from more than one engineer about MAN having jeopardised their reliability when they went electronic (as they surely are on the F630, as opposed for instsnce to BA).
Otoh, I've yet to find any engineer who doesn't agree that MTUs are the best in class, in the 1000/2000 hp range.
That said, I'd prefer the SL under pretty much all other respects, too... :)

You're teasing me again! Why do you prefer the SL? I have to say that an esteemed member of this forum takes the opposite view!

Yup, the MAN engines in the F630 are indeed electronic

LOL, name & shame first!
I made my outing already... :)
Nope, he will have to do that for himself as the comment was made in a PM. However that shouldn't stop you telling me why the SL62 is better. I have an open mind on this and I could be swayed either way so any comments would be welcome

Ok, but I'll rather wait for the outing then, 'cause you made me curious...
And must logoff now, anyway...

+1,
why ?
not because of the MTU's,
despite the fact that these have a unbeatable reputation, but the "select" number of service engineers and accordingly rates would scare me,

but regarding SL versus F,
a big part of the decision making is emotion,
The SL, when with the right finish/accomodation, is a much more timeless vessel
I haven't done any accurate investigation on depreciation between these two, so all imho,
and thats why I say it needs to have the right fitout.
Deleted User, you should make a separate / new thread for this

Actually, Bart it was you who asked me the question and started the thread drift;) I don't really want to start a new thread comparing these 2 boats at this stage because I don't have all the information on the SL yet and we've only seen poor quality photos. After we've inspected it and seen the 630 again and if I'm still not sure, I will put a thread up

Naah, not for me, anyway.
If nothing else, 'cause I'm considering neither, and never will. Which makes me at least rather objective, I suppose. :)
But I won't explain yet the reasons for my preference, because I am guessing (sort of) the reasons of whoever made the opposite suggestion, and mine are probably not comparable. So, I'd be curious to hear them first.
Maybe Deleted User could at least disclose the content of the other forumite suggestion, if not the name?
...though I'd also guess he was PYB... Am I winning anything? :D

Mind, all that said, we are talking of two of the best boats in their size range, so you can't actually go wrong with either.
As always with boats, there's an "each to their own" component, which is very respectable.

Aha, but are you meaning that you've yet to see the SL in flesh?
If so, when you will, just a small hint: look "under the skin" in each and every possible way. Floor hatches, electrical panels, whatever.
Dare I say even the black water tank? :ambivalence: :)
