Just wanted to check what is best practice when calculating the engine bay volume to select the appropriate sized fire extinguisher.

Do you deduct the engine from the total volume? as this makes a difference in price on what size extinguisher to be purchase.

Thanks.

I would be surprised if you deduct engine volume ( i can see your point) as i doubt it is a published figure.

If you take its core volume ( ie the smallest bit without any tubes etc on) I would be surprised if it made that much difference.

You really dont want an extinguisher that is undersize. What would your insurers say - they may not agree with the deduction method.

The only reliable way i suspect is to ask the manufacturer who may well take this into account to some degree.

The reason I asked, one of the suppliers stated to remove impermeables from the space to get the volume. Agree that I don't want to go under size, just want to make I have adequate protection and wondered what others do when fitting fire systems to their engine bay.
