Morning all,

It is my first trip accross to Calais from the Blackwater this weekend and I am planning to leave the Blackwater just after local HW, through the Spitway, head north of Barrow No.4, cross the Sunk a little more than 1 hour before LW near the Sunk beacon and then through Foulgers Gat.

Once past N Foreland head inside the Goodwins then straight accross the TSS and aiming to be East of Calais so that as the tide turns about 1 Hr before HW Dover it will be taking me to the West and in to the Port, that way if I am a liitle late arriving I will not be pushing against the west going tide. also if i am Early i will only be pushing agains the last of a foul tide.

Does this sound OK to you all or am I missing something obvious?

Thanks in advance for your help...

David

Our thoughts are somewhat different but maybe not better. We are from the Crouch although timings are very similar.
Our plan is to arrive at Calais as near to HW as possible (minimum time waiting for bridge opening).
Leaving Burnham (Fri Midnight) against the flood and being somewhere around Sunk/Foulgers when the tide at last turns Southerly and favourable. Takes advantage of all the strong flood down past outside the Goodwins and on to Calais. Also crosses the TSS at good angle and easily up-tide of the harbour.
Still have to finalise our plan but it seems reasonable from the multitude of options and routings available. Won't have the means to revisit our plan or really work through yours until later in week however you may want to compare?

If you cross nearer Barrow No 2 than the Sunk itself you'll see on the chart there is more water over the sand - there's a contour you can follow. My experience (admittedly in October) is that there was water more or less as marked on the chart there. Good luck.

Hope to see you there; but we are coming from the opposite direction. (Being exiled members of Benfleet Yacht Club.) Leaving Portsmouth early on Thursday morning. None of those tricky mudbanks on our route. Or have I missed something?

Benfleet Y.C. ...... From Portsmouth ?... No wonder you lot always win first prize !. Have a good trip, see you there.
Peegee.
