Calais ferme

There is an announcement on the Calais Marina website explaining that due to works taking place they cannot accommodate visitors until 5th of August.

They started the work last season, it is due to complete August 2016 but given the gates took years longer than was planned.................

During this period they said last season the number of visitor's berths will be severely reduced. The man in charge, Etienne Canon, suggested that anyone planning to go to Calais during this period should contact him first to see if they can accommodate, his number is on the web site

There are major work going on, 8 million euros worth, a new 35Ton lift and dock are being built. A number of the pontoons have been moved for the winter to the far end of the basin, this happened in October last year. The roadway into the marina has a weight / height restriction because of underground problems between the dock and the canal. There is a new road entrance at the other end of the dock area. We lifted out in October and were advised that it would be impossible to launch until May this year. (I fully expect this to be put back a number of weeks or months) Good news is our fees have been very heavenly discounted for the year along with everyone else in the marina. Micky's bar open as normal.
The swing bridge is fully automatic and will open / close to a time table.

So it will swing open for a set amount of time regardless of how many boats are trying to pass through?

It will open at a set time (based on high water time), the time for which it is open can be varied depending on seasonal factors and sensors built into the dock.

This is some of what they are doing

Nice pics Bendyone, I missed these at the time you posted them.

I was there at the weekend (and again next weekend, hopefully coming back with the boat this time) and it's still much the same. As advertised, there isn't much in the way of facilities. What little they have in the way of visitor berths is on the other side near where the fishermen berth. And no water, leccy, fuel, or anything really. The showers are still available but it's a bit of a trek round there. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit until they have finished to be honest. On the plus side, it's only €9 a night whilst it's a building site.

I'm still out on the hard, which is not a problem for me at the moment, but they had said it will be ready in May. I'm planning a quick daytrip (P&O) next week to have a look and see when it's likely to be ready to go back in.

All this is from Wednesday this week. It's a bit of a mess, a lot of the wok has been done but there is still more to finish, probably going to be September buy the time it's done. The problem is no one knows when or what the final outcome will be.

And this is when they hit the pontoon and fishing boat the other side. :ambivalence:

When the work is done it's going to be good, a new travelhoist is coming in July, the shop is being moved to the east end and 100 new berths are going to be installed.
Visitors are not particularity welcomed but can be accommodated on the south wall pontoon, ( no water electric or wifi ) the alternative is to lock into the other basin and then into the canal where there is space to moor.

Because of my position it is imposable to launch until the work is done, ( I was told May when I lifted out), without major expense and a big mobile crane, so depending on timing I will probably say out till next year, which is not a problem fore me this year.
