I am told by Yann that the berthing fees for Marina Cala D'Or are going up by 15%. I have just renewed so it goes up for me next year but, apparently, the increase applies from now to all newcomers.

Hmmm......

Do I look for somewhere cheaper in the med or do I figure that at 3K per month I need to spend more time on the boat to get my money's worth? :)

When was the last time they put prices up, and by how much?

If you can go elsewhere on the island and get it cheaper then sound like you may as well.

The bigger question is should you leave the Balearics altogether.

Well, Yann reckons he is (was) the cheapest marina in Mallorca. I found that a bit hard to believe but I suspect that all the marinas on the island are putting their prices up because, quite simply, they can and he is following suit.

The question is, as you rightly say, will the marinas price themselves out of the market and start an exodus?

Have you considered buying a lease to a mooring? If you intend to stay in one location for a few years, it can be a reasonable way of insulating yourself from price increases and currency fluctuations (although currency fluctuations can go in your favour as well).

I'd regard them as one of the dearest, not one of the cheapest. And I thought Yann was a bit of a ****.

Just had the renewal through for our boat (had to chase for it mind you). No increase on last year, got €1.16 to the £ and the marina is more interested in beam than length, which favours boats like ours.

At £3000 a month I would rent a villa and keep a small boat in the yard to have fun in

I don’t know about Spain but here during the height of the financial crisis I thought that I would get a berth. But not a single vacancy was created, so if if the market can survive that I suspect they can put up the prices as much as they like.

Puerto Portals have gone up this year by 5% on 2018, 15x5m port rental berth now E28k +iva & water/elect, don't know how this compares to Cala D'or, I always thought was similar prices? .... would be nice if the £ rises against the euro :encouragement:
Apologies that should have been 28euros/pa !

I know that I keep going on about this but on the mainland a 15m berth would cost you 3500 euros including IVA including water including electricity.
The difference pays for a lot of fuel to cross the 100 miles to the islands - as many times as you like each year.

Is that 3500 euro per what ???????

They will charge what the market will bear . Cala d Or has always been a popular location with boaters throughout Europe, bad times or good.
There is good reason they can charge a premium over mainland ports. Demand.
Try getting a berth in next door Porto Petro.
There will always be another boater attracted by the image of the "Med" prepared to find the money to moor there.
Might be time for folks already down there to desist from singing its praises :)

Even at those eye-watering prices most of the marinas in Mallorca are full, Portals tell me they have no port rental berths available & haven't had for at least the last 2 years..... property is equally eye-watering! Beginning to feel we are the becoming the poor people of the world :ambivalence:

Our apartment is in Cala D’Or just behind the marina so it’s logical that our boat should be there. Having said that we only use the boat between May & October so may look at alternatives to annual berthing contract - keeping the boat on dry land and just dropping her in when we are there. I know we will pay higher daily rates when in the water but if it saves on an annual basis then it could be worthwhile.

II think Portals has dry stacking for boats my size and although not on the door step it is less than an hours drive so may also be worth investigating.

Not really a solution for those with bigger boats but could work for us.
