Cala d'Or as home port.

Just an update.... after my recent fact finding tour of marinas, the time has come to commit to the idea of boating in the Mediterranean and put money where mouth is.... so today we have signed up for a spot in Cal d'Or.
Thanks to all of you who have offered advice and encouragement. All I need to do now is get the boat down there ready for next season.
Are Peters & May the experts for shipping by sea or are there reliable alternatives that I should also be asking for a price?
I have to admit to being quite excited by this new adventure..
Rick

Hi Rick,

I sent a full reply to your PM on Sunday 18th but see that your PM and my reply have disappeared from my 'in box' and 'sent box'

Glad to see that you have made the jump and have sent a PM with my phone number so please call if you need any advice or help.

You may need help with the unloading process in Mallorca and temporary berthing of the boat in the Palma area until taking it to Cala d'Or, if this is so I can suggest a really good and reliable person to help.

Doug

Thanks Nick. I had assumed I would be too high or wide to be viable by road, but I will certainly ask the question.

What's your transport height/beam like compared to a Princess 54? Coast 2 Coast have moved a Princess 54 through Europe (although not in the UK):

The P58 looks to be 1.26m longer, 0.26m wider and has the same published draft as the P54. Not sure about overall height. Will need to do further research.
The Sq58 will be even closer as it is about the same width at 4.82m. Looks like its worth checking out the options. Thanks chaps.

Length and beam OK as they are same as a Sq58 which can definitely go by road. I'd guess that a P54 is as high as a P58, as later designs seem to be taller, so I think there's a good chance you'll have the option of road transport

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. Im learning that getting a boat moved isn't just a case of picking up the phone, booking it in and paying some money! The ships have now stopped until the new year. There will possibly be a suitable sailing in January but I may hang on a little longer and ideally get her down there in March. Ive logged my interest with PSP and P&M, and now have to sit tight and see what comes up.
I discussed the road option with Coast to Coast, but the height is a problem so I would have to load her on the French coast. I was happy to consider this but the disarmingly frank advice I received from CtoC was that I would be better off all round on a ship. R

Hi

I moved my P50 from London to St Carles last year...Same situation as you...Tried to plan ahead and remove all unknowns just didn't work..!!..its just not possible even for anal project manager like me...so here is my version of events, which may give you an idea of what you are in for.

In the end we went through the ship, haul or drive it discussions and everyone (cept a few who have a lot of time to spare) said Ship It. So we did.

I fell for the 7* pitch at the boat show.
Moved boat to Pool in March and did all necessary upgrades to A/C, Bimini and Passarelle ect. all good so far

Then spent a lot money keeping boat in Southampton waiting for a ship.
Service was awful. The process dragged on and on and on, we booked, cancelled and rebooked flights, Palma marina berths and holiday slots with the boss all changed as well. Eventually gave up trying to control the situation and just chilled out and waited for someone to tell me when to fly.

The time came and I flew out on a thu night as it was "most likely" to be unloaded within 24hr so best be ready Friday. It finally arrived Sat and was told the port doesn't work on Sat so will have to be unloaded Monday morning. When I visited the ship on the Saturday the nice captain explained that the port does work on Saturday but 7* wont pay the overtime..Grrrr

The boat was filthy dirty and so we climbed up make shift ladders and stripped down to swimmers to do a 50ft boat wash on the outside edge of a cargo ship...

We retired to the Club de Mar yacht club which was awesome until we woke up at 2pm to the sound of deep bass club music coming through the walls. The club was most apologetic but said they have this problem every Saturday and there is no way they can control the noise. (top tip - Great place but don't stay there on Saturday night)

On the day of the launch we had a few technical glitches.. always check the power breakers...even the ones you didn't know existed!

We sorted that out and then went to pay the bill at the marina only to be told that we had to go immediately to police station as they didn't think we had the right papers... called our 7* assigned "port representative" and he resolved it...but scary for an hour or two.

We set off the very next morning and had an exciting trip from Palma to San Antonio (Ibiza) and then on to Valencia and then on to St Carle's. Where a warm welcome awaited...

We thought we had arrived...but actually, we had only just started our journey.. We had a great 2.5 week summer holiday on the islands..but just found the journey from the airport too much for weekend breaks and so we will sadly have to leave SCM and find somewhere nearer an airport ...we hadn't thought it would be so important but if you are still working to pay the bills...its almost THE most important thing about med boating for us...everything else is just as you would imagine...friendly people, beautiful scenery and wonderful seas..

Good luck with your move.. hope to see you in SCM before we go. I will be there next weekend to do a check and chores weekend.

As its not a pleasant journey, I will be solo (SWMBO says she feels guilty but she has other priorities) so if any one around in SCM next weekend, I will see you in the bar :-)

Insightful write-up, thanks. Staying in Spain, or might you consider SoF?

Yup insightful write up Martin. You are in the same place as me I think, which is 1. Sevenstar are just not a nice firm to deal with, though needs must etc, and 2. With Med boating, if you're a bit short of time, you need to be close to an airport

Hi Martin. Thanks for sharing the transport experiences. Sounds stressful! I did get a taste of it when my boat was brought up from Mallorca this Spring. I was one step removed however, as it was part of the deal to take delivery in the UK, so all the transport was arranged by PMYS. It soon became apparent that even they had no hope of influencing anything and the process was a painful one. The boat was originally due to get to be offloaded in Southampton early March which turned into Rotterdam, then Antwerp at the end of April! No choice except to sit back and relax, as you say. After my boat was loaded I tracked the ship as it continued East to Malta and did 2 stops in Turkey before turning to head the 'right way' There was an unscheduled stop in Milford Haven and we considered unloading the boat there, but let her go on to Antwerp. CLOUD9 was finally offloaded a month after being put on the ship!
Im hoping things are easier on the way back down, but not holding breath.
After a look around a couple of weeks ago, we concluded that Cala d'Or would be our home for the first season. I did visit Sant Carles and had a wonderful day there, but the final decision went to Cala d'Or... have you decided on a location for next season? Hope to see you around.

For anyone interested or who might be contemplating something similar... and update on CLOUD9's progress to the Mediterranean.
The winter has been spent getting the usual chores dealt with and also a few more specific things needed for life in the Med. Ive taken a lot of advice from the forum (thank you), and on Monday she was ready to go.
The shipping has gone smoothly so far... The ship has been on time loading in Southampton, and is due to dock in Palma Mallorca on Saturday. This is actually earlier than I had been told to expect, so up to now the shipping experience has been a better one than I was expecting. (Perhaps I should wait until all safely offloaded)!
I will try to get a couple of photographs uploaded.

Wow! That makes the summer seem that much closer!

Are you needing to be there to meet the ship so you can 'drive it away' or will that be managed by the shippers. Just thinking that with the ship arriving earlier than planned and your flight is booked to coincide with the original arrival date the two events may not merge?

That all looks promising
Good luck

We have booked into Alcudia for the first week in May.
Was thinking of going home the long way round and popping into Cala D'Or on the way back.
Depends on how much time SWMBO has before we need to get back to SC.
But it would be good to see you in your new home.
