We are by the ty coch tonight having navigated last year's route over the bar.
We went through dead on HW and saw only 3.8 metres by c3. This was on a 3.8m tide .

This would suggest the channel has moved or silted up. I suspect it has moved a quite a bit further north of C3.

Also the green entry gate mark was awol. The fairway mark is difficult to spot as it has no top mark.

Considering how expensive our CHT dues are we should surely be getting some better service.

Lovely day here company of dolphins.

Oh be warned two pints in the Ty coch 8.50 ouch....

The situation seems to have been getting worse up and down the straits for a few years. The bar at Plas Menai between Port Dinorwic and Caernarfon seems worse every time I do it. The bar is getting harder all the time, I draw 2.5m and do the Round Anglesey Race most years, the bar is a breath holding job now as we go through about three hours after local HW.

Now look here Steve, your now anchored in my favourite place in the world! Sat at home as working this weekend! ..well jealous!
hopefully over to boat later in the week
presumably Ty Coch on winter hours? = lunchtime drinking? good on you! Cheers

Just heard from Sea Flush on fb that they were working on the buoys today!

Expect an Ntm from Dick Dock on Monday then.

Your were there in good time! what a great view

Guess you know Steve, but there was a tragic accident last week, one of the local fisherman, Gareth sadly died whilst out fishing for scallops.
The community has been hit hard, the Porth Dinllaen Lifeboat Coxswain Mike told me the full story last week. Just thought I would mention it if you wondered why the bay was so quiet.

Have a great trip and hopefully bump into you this season somewhere along Pen Llyn

Cheers

Just back in over bar.

Outer port and starboard gate marks in a totally different position to last year.Channel has reverted to the more usual route you do not do a 90 degree turn at C3 as last year.

Fairway mark still missing top mark. Came back in at half tide least depth seen was 3.6 m.

Details are now available from CHT.

Well done Dick Dock!

If you E mail Richard the harbour Master he will put you on his list for receiving Local Notices to Mariners (richard@caernarfon-hbr.demon.co.uk )

received two today confirming that C! and C2 are back on station and identifying the new positions ( see below) and the other showing the new channel with chartlet and the areas where they are currently carrying out surveys

Mariners are advised that Channel Buoy C1 is now back on station. My notice 01/2014 is
hereby cancelled.
Mariners are advised that Channel Buoys C1 and C2 have been repositioned to the positions
listed above due to movement of the channel. The accompanying update for the Caernarfon
Bar Buoys (dated 11.04.2014) shows the latest positions.

Would never consider going over the bar without first checking on Caernarfon Harbour Trusts web site

"Last years chart for the bar is dated 5 May, so perhaps too early to expect this years revised positions?"

Duncan 99210 . You need to look at the Local Notices to Mariners which are produced on a ongoing basis as change occurs. Prior to the latest above the last was in January 2014. They are reaching Turkey so should not be a problem in Greece

All CHT info is still dated 2013 as of Saturday, 12 April. Where have you seen anything later, please. We hope to cross on Tuesday.

Vyv you clearly have not followed the thread . Read my post #10 with an extract from Local Notice to Mariners 2/2014 dated 12 April 2014 and look at the Local Notices to Mariners http://www.caernarfon-hbr.demon.co.uk/note_e.htm which has updates to January 2014 . Richard will no doubt have 2/2014 on the Trusts web page on Monday morning together with the chartlet I refer to which I am unable to copy on to here as it is a PDF. I can E mail a copy of both the Notice 2/2014 and chartlet if you wish.
You boys with boats in Greece do seem to have problems navigating the Trusts web site :)

Last time I sailed in tidal waters, websites hadn't been invented! I did miss the fact that they had put the chartlet on Notices, so thanks for that. Hope the channel is still the same on Tuesday.

Chartlet of position as at 11/04/2014 now on the CHT website http://www.caernarfon-hbr.demon.co.uk/buoy_e.htm . Always worth giving the Harbour office a quick ring particularly as the current chartlet shows surveying taking place either side of the channel at the entrance. Now is it a tenth of a metre or a large quarter of a metre tide in the Gulf of Gokova today??;)

Just received E mail from CHT saying the Notice to Mariners 2/2014 that I reproduced has an error however the corrected version as now been posted on the website.

I heard that you were skipper of HMS Conway when she ran aground in The Swellies in 1953.........any truth in this, Vyv :)

Other than a few short trips in Milford Haven, which barely counts, my last was from Royan up the Gironde. Easy 50 miles in one tide with a huge tidal flow under us.

Made the trip OK, Fishguard to Porth Dinllaen was far enough without a diversion for a gunnery target. Caernarfon Harbour emailed me with the latest buoy positions, excellent service. Easy crossing on almost flat water and nice not to have to go almost to Llanddwyn, as it used to be when we crossed the bar in the olden days.

Hi Vyv,

We're due for haul in tomorrow, Wednesday. If you're in The Straits, give us a shout as it would be nice to say "thank you" for the opinion you kindly gave me last year.
