will shortly be booking a bouy for our first visit to cabrera. Any useful info or tips. Boat is exactly 15m (well 14.93) so I would assume as buoy for 12m-15m is fine?

Am thinking of booking 2 days (say a tue and fri). If the first day is going to be windy/wavey then can cancel and use the next day.

I expect we will only anchor during the day, so leaving Portals around 7am and then leave cabrera around 5pm. Only have 3 cabins and I think 10 will be on board. As you can arrive from 5pm the previous day if I dont take the buoy then, will they automatically cancel if I havent attached myself within say 12 hours?

Thanks
Tony

It's a good question an I'm also interested if any one has some info.
Last year we booked for just the one day but the weather was bad so had to cancel.
This year I plan to book 2 days but am also concerned whether the booked buoy will remain ours and available if we don't arrive until the following morning.
The 5-6 pm change time is quite odd.

They won't cancel the buoy if you don't arrive until the next morning.

However there are some day buoys that cant be booked(first come first served) and are free of charge. Not sure if 15m boat is too large for them though. If I'm just going to the day I'll just pick up a day buoy.

You cant really "cancel" as far as I know - you just loose your money. they are not dear. Bear in mind the bouy runs form 6pm on day 1 to 5pm the following day.

It is a natural harbour and once inside will nearly always be flat.

I have not tried this - there are day bouys for which I gather you need an annual pass but they are only for either 12m or 15 m max I cant recall - I am 18 so I have never looked.

There are quite a few of the 15m bouys

if there is no space then you will need to find the man in the rib ( very tricky as he is only out in the 5 - 6 time slot and you cant anchor anywhere to goto shore and I would be sceptical if they will answer Chanel 16.

You will solve it in the end - and if not just take a day bouy and if he comes along then problem solved !

Sorry - others have replied whilst I was typing

Cabrera is fabulous and if you are able I would encourage you to spend the night. I do not believe that your buoy will be cancelled as there are generally a few boats that come just for the day and in any case you will have paid for the buoy upfront with no refund available. Occasionally I have seen boats "hovering" looking for unused buoys but the system is quite efficient and the gardia that patrol are always around. As you say you will need to book the 12 - 15m buoys. One tip is that when you book if it shows no availability as a private skipper boat, try again but tick the charter boat box. This has worked for me and no one has ever asked if I was a charter.

thanks all - buoy is only €30 for a full day, so not really worried about losing the money. No point in risking not getting a buoy.

Julians - I would prefer to stay overnight but alas I think we will have too many people, hence the need for a bigger boat in a few years!

I just found my booking from last year, it clearly states you can arrive anytime from 18:00 til 17:00, so it won't be lost officially.
I suspect the only problem maybe if a day tripper turns up early and takes your bookable buoy.

Interesting. So if you want to have a day of play in Cabrera you have to arrive in the evening, stay overnight and then have your playtime the following day and then go home. Is that right?

Your mooring booking is for 23/24 hours, the earliest you can arrive is 5/6pm on the booked day, but you can arrive at say 10am the next day, and stay until 5pm, But you have to be off by 5.

Unless you go for the day buoys which are available from something like 10am on a. First come first served basis and only available for boats up to 15m.

No, it's been the case for years.

You're supposed to have one even if you just pass through the waters(as marked by several large yellow buoys a few miles off the island) surrounding cabrera.

I guess from your comment thatthey don't check it much.

just filled in the "permit for navigation". Takes 5 minutes. Think they only really need it so they can ensure you have seen the map so you know where you can/cannot go.
