In the distant past I used some non-standard cable ties. The standard ones have the locking piece at 90° to the end. The ones I want to find, have the locked piece parallel to the end. I hope that makes sense! I have a need not to have a big lump where they are locked. Does anyone know what these may be called or indeed where they can be bought?

Some of the so called reusable plastic cable ties fit your description, if I understand your requirements correctly.

The other option is stainless steel cable ties. These have a different and low profile locking mechanism that I think would solve your problem. Of course stainless steel is different to plastic with very different advantages and drawbacks, which may be a help, or a hindrance in your application.

Then there is always self amalgamating tape.

If you cannot find what you are looking for maybe Velcro, or other hook and loop, cable ties will be suitable

Lots of great ideas.

Instant help with problems like this is why sailing forums are so valuable.

Except when people have an idea that they cannot justify or a product that they omit to define all the, more obvious, characteristics. A series of assertions and posts that cannot be substantiated devalues the quality of a forum and bring into question its credibility. Most people do seem to take care and post with honest intentions - you are right - forum can be valuable - but need treated with caution and veracity tested if there are doubts.

People can draw there own conclusions when information cannot be supported, especially when it occurs regularly.

I am sure you will agree the constant questioning of ideas, concepts etc can only result in the maintenance of accurate and quality posts and ensure dangerous suggestions can be underlined - particularly when the initiator of the idea cannot substantiate - anything.

I just love the double sided velcro tape sold as cable tidy. It has hook on one side pile on the other. You wrap it around whatever and wrap around again if you want strength. I have used it for quite a few years to hold the clew down to the boom with about 3 wraps so very strong but easy to remove and re use. ol'will

Some 'velcro' does not have a very long life if exposed to sunlight (though cable ties have a similar weakness - black ones are a bit better than white).

Sounds like a job for lacing cord?

That brings back memories! Miles and miles of lacing cord on looms, only for some pongo to cut it "to fault find"!
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions, and Jonathan's comments. Paul Rainbow got them with his first post. I'll try to order them when I'm home in a few weeks.
