Hi, I have a old Princess 32 on twin volvo stern drives. The controls from the Morse controler is very stiff and as the boat is out the water for the winter I think I need to change the cables as the Morse end seems fine.

My question is how do I order new ones ?

is there a makers mark I should look for ?

is it just the length i need to measure ?

regards del

If there brown Volvo cables the length is on them in white print , if there black teleflex cables the part number is on them. If here red morse cables there is also some I D on them , or just remove and measure.

Don't for get to set them up on the drive end before you launch.

Yes.

Best way is to remove them (taped to long piece of string to help pull through on reinstallation) and measure from tip to tip. You can also check the lengths stamped on them as vp says, if you know what to look for.

When I do them, I always measure to be absolutely certain.

When putting it all back together, use NEW split pins at each end :)

Hi, may I offer some advice before you go investing in changing the cables. try disconnecting the cables from the drive end (easy job once out the water) and check for the build up of calcium deposits on the inner cable where it's exposed to salt water i.e. behind the cover where they connect to the drive. Remove the deposits with wire wool then grease liberally with teflon infused grease, such as Quicksilver 2-4c (I think). I know some folk that pack the casing with grease to prevent re-occurance. Also check there's good alignment of the inner cable in the same area as the cable can be distorted when it's pushed through the transom / guide tube during installation. once disconnected you can try various positions and see if it has a positive effect. This worked for me in similar circumstances to yourself with the result being the difference between hardly being able to select reverse gear and easily being able to select both forward and reverse, much much quicker and less hassle than going for changing the cables. If taking these steps have no effect, then yes, I'd suggest going ahead and changing the cables (Teleflex type 33's???). p.s. Also try disconnecting the gear change cables from the remote morse controls at the helm to double check it's not the throttle cables or the remote selector itself e.g. it could be that the levers just need loosening off (there's tension adjustments possible on most models)

cheers Gary

Got new one for mine, its the brown volvo type, i got the volvo part number from the cable and cross referenced it to a teleflex one.

Paul, I know this is a reply to an old thread but I have a Princess 35 with Volvo Penta twin engines. My question is - do you have to take the boat out of the water to replace the cables?
Thanks
