cabin cruiser and river/canal mooring advice.

hi, was looking at a couple of options a Norman viking 20ft which has a berth at Bishopsthorpe... and another one a Callumcraft 22ft at boroughbridge. The one in york is where i would like to be, but the boat is a tad higher priced prob due to it having a ready mooring which i am told is 880 p.a. if there are any other ideas for cheaper moorings please let me know... maybe rental of a private one? (off a farmer? or something like that?)

i personally would not want to just leave my boat anywhere regardless of the price of the boat there are some very different type of people on the rivers you know they are not all nice law abiding folk like us

i cant see you getting much less than 880 per year if you do it wont be up to much i bet and your pride and joy wont be very safe
 
what does people think of fairline 21?
also, general advice of starting to clean up a boat.. get it sparking, what products/techniques would you use... complete newbie, but want to get an old boat looking good... body work, Tonneau etc... is there any good products out there for getting best appearance out of a tonneau cover?
any advice appreciated.

A Fairline 21 or Weekender is a great starter boat. If I recall correctly there are 3 berths, with the cockpit OK for 4 people. Clearly they are getting a bit old now, but if properly maintained, will be a good introduction.

Cleaning a boat is a bit like a car, except there is more of it. There are many ways of cleaning the canopy and covers, Renovo do specialist marine cleaners and proofer, and I have used these to good effect in the past. My favorite hull cleaner is Aldi Caravan Cleaner, £1.99 a litre bottle. If stains are really subborn, up the dosage. You will then need to cut the hull gelcoat with something like T-Cut. There are marine versions, but of course more expensive. You will need to polish afterwards, and again there are many marine polishes, some of which I have used, but I get the best finish from Auto Glym. The best cleaner I have found for the interior is ArmourAll Vinyl cleaner from Halfords, £5.99 a pop. Works really well. For the heads, I use CIF. For carpets, you are on your own. Good luck:)

The Ouse at York is prone to flooding.
I would want to be on a floating pontoon in York marina so the boat remains safe even in a flood. But I guess thats not a cheap option and I am fairly sure the cost will be more than £880.
You might try York Motor Yacht Club . I believe the club owns a number of moorings along the river. I think they will be fixed moorings.
Presumably you know you wil need insurance and a river license , and the boat will need to have a current boat safety certificate.

You only have to read a few posts on the canal boat forums to realise just how true this is, our marina has had to install code locks on the toilet block as people have been getting in and using them and in the owners own words leaving quite a mess, not heard him swear so guess he means **** everywhere!
The whole marina apart from the entrance is surrounded by water, so must be boat related somehow.

hi all, boat i'm getting is a fairline family 20. Which looks fine depsite being an old boat. But intend dishing out plenty of tlc. ie: treating/waxing/polishing.
Renovo on plastics/acrylics and canopy. inc colour renewer. Be nice to watch it develop. Anyone got some good ideas/experience for interior? cheers
 
yes, got in touch with existing owners insurance, and its a simple matter of transferring.
Is the boat licence fee £450? and does this allow you to moor up anywhere relevant on waterways way away from own mooring?

PS: still working out best way to tackle ageing perspex? ive got some renovo plastic renovator on order will give this a go.. did I read someone suggest brasso on perspex as well? But failing that is there specific places where you can get the relevant perspex sections and install back into alu frames myself?
