The latex backing of my cabin carpet has started to leave powdery deposits when lifting the carpet.

As the actual carpet surface is in very good condition, I don't want to renew the carpet, so does anyone know of a good product that I can apply over the original backing to seal the latex?

How much of an area do you have to do?

I sealed the edges of a cut carpet with Copydex glue, following a tip I read somewhere. Dries clear and worked a treat. Might be worth a trial on a small bit of carpet if you get no better suggestions..

Thanks for the suggestion...the area of the carpet is only about 2 sqm.

If it is only 2 sm them why not replace. Buy a remnant, cut and any carpet shop will whip bind it.

If the backing has gone it is on its way out.

As I have a further five pieces of the same carpet on the boat, I think it would be very difficult to get a perfect match for a replacement...hence my thoughts for a possible repair.

I have this exact same problem with my cockpit carpets and it seems to be a common problem with the carpets fitted to a Searay. There's a long thread on re-painting the back of the carpets to seal them on the Searay owner's forum. The general consensus is that a paint called plastidip is the best http://www.plastidip.co.uk/. I plan to give it a go.

+1.... I have done the back of my carpets with plastidip and it works. I wire brushed all the old black stuff off and then gave two coats of white plastidip. No more nasty black mess!
