Like many people, I need to get up my mast to sort out various bits and pieces and my willing but small crew is unable to winch me up on a bosuns chair.
So on Sunday went on this Cruising association day course with Barney Green as instructor.
First class, laid-back, loads of really useful info, demonstrations of technique and equipment and then loads of hands on practise, all done in a relaxed and safe way.
So if you want to climb the mast on your own, or with minimal back up and lack the necessary expertise I would highly recommend this course.
This is Barney's site; http://www.highersafety.org/
He also runs courses on his own boat.
Usual caveats.
