Have just done an exchange from the standard C-maps for the SuperWide C-maps, so now have charts of the whole of the english channel and the whole of ireland. My raymarine ploter / radar which has a mono screen is not the latest from raymarine but approx 4 years old, it seems very unhappy with both of these charts loaded at the same time. Almost an information overload for the plotter running slower and sometimes crashing out.

With the two standard charts i had previously this was not the case, it was happy. I have solved the problem by just loading one of the superwide charts and will load the chart of ireland as and when needed.

Has anyone else come across this problem ?

I'm assuming the newer plotters from raymarine with the HSB2 have a better memory and can handle the information better, and there is nothing wrong with my plotter and C-maps.

Roger thanks for your reply.

Yes your right passage planning is very slow. I only noticed the problems when i initially looked at all four corners of the chart to check the coverage areas. under normal conditions when under sail and sailing in the area the plotter seems quite stable.

I have only one superwide chart loaded at present, and the other card slot is blank which helps a bit. Glad i'm not the only one that has experienced this.

Its possible you're short of memory, but well worth asking Raymarine on their website what they think. Its free, so its no bother. One alternative might be that you need a software update. They've revved this a few times, as C-Map make changes to their cartridges. Its simple to do, free, and in the US its a user installable option. In the UK they seem to think its a dealer's job, but you can usually get round that with a friendly dealer.

Yup, I concur. I've just had the software in my Raymarine chartplotter updated from v1.08 to v4.11 - and it seems (superficially) to be quite a bit faster (as well as more stable). It may be doable without removing the unit, but mine had to go to raymarine.

As long as there's no hardware to upgrade (i.e. HSB to HSB2), it can be done via a special C-Map cartridge. As Rick says, a friendly dealer can be persuaded to part with one, if you're lucky.

BTW, Rick, how much did they sting you? And can you PM me your mobile, please, I've lost it...

So the special cartridge trick should have worked (both units hsb2) but it didn't - so off to raymarine (according to the engineer). I got away with the software upgrade charge, so just the engineers time. I think they want 150 a unit officially though.

Next job is the rather sick ICS Navtex aerial....
