I could go on but I'm sure for each person like you that they frighten off they are loosing 10's of thousands of euros - probably more like 30,000 to 40,000 p.a.
All potentially going into the Mallorcian infrustructure.

Yup, thats pretty much what I was putting into the Spanish economy every year. Now it's going into the Italian economy

I do hope you enjoy Sardinia. The Spainish really are being very short sighted on this issue. Just a thought, not trying to teach you to suck eggs etc, but as a registered charter vessel, do you not have to keep a set of audited accounts like any other business? I would have thought if your figures were very low with little or no profit a Spainsh accountant could have made a case on your behalf? I guess you have been down that road?

Medskipper, that wouldn't have worked. Matriculation tax is paid by all Spanish boat owners except on those boats that are less than 15m length (actually it's not loa but equivalent to hull length at plimsoll line) and are used ONLY for charter. Just one trip for personal use causes mat tax to be due. The critical point is that the Spanish tax authorities suddenly decided that by offering a boat for charter thru a Spanish charter company, foreign owners like me effectively become Spanish resident for mat tax purposes. So, if I or any owner like me took just one trip out on our boats for personal use, then mat tax became due. Every time you visit a Spanish marina, like every other Med marina, you have to give all your personal details so there's no way I could claim every trip I made in 5 yrs was charter only

Interesting price list on the port's website mike. It's quite clear as to the price in high season! for my boat a wole year's berthing is 18k but 10months excluding July and August is only 6k So that's €200/night in July and August. That's pretty much what I found this summer in italian ports: Portoferriao, etc were all 200+ per night. Cavallo was €300 a night, the most I've ever paid. The nearby French ports (bonifacio et al) were more like 140

Yup, I bet it's total bedlam in July/Aug. Actually, the total annual berthing cost for my boat including Jul/Aug is still less than what I was paying for a year in Palma. We'll see how it goes. I might move the boat elsewhere for Jul/Aug

well done, maybe see you in Sardinia, next spring, on our way to the Ionian. We are also voting with our keel, not because of Mat tax. but because of prices and general hassle from guardia, questions all the time etc. plus we've "done" Spain for now anyway.

I wintered in Alghero, wouldnt do it again, the surge in the harbour was horrible, I parted 4x 20mm warps in one night, plus of course, they roll the pavements up in October and dont put them back down until May! Dead is a word I would use.

Cruising there is wonderful and corsica is but a hop away for you.

Yup, delivery crew reported worst part of the journey was leaving Alghero harbour punching into the swell. Let me know when you are visiting Sardinia

LOL, yeah, I guess they'll rather stay in the Unesco list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Re. the grass, don't worry, that's in the most internal parts of Sardinia. Well worth a trip btw, whenever you'll have a free day during your stay. And even there, it doesn't rain that much actually.
But yes, the land is overall greener than you'd expect based on its average climate.

Hi Mike, sensible to move before the next wave of fines kick in! As you know, we moved on from Menorca in June and haven't looked back. We went up to the SoF and have a great time exploring there. Sardinia was an option we thought about and may well again in a few years time so it will be great to hear what you think about it. Congratulations on the move and I hope you have a great time there!

Hi woodie1000, I wondered how you were getting on. I bet you're thanking your lucky stars you escaped in time. I wish to hell I'd done the same thing. I thought about going to SoF but we've had a season there already

Absolutely. No regrets about leaving and we were lucky. We're thinking about doing a Corsica cruise next summer so we may be able to meet up.
