This is attached to my dv20 engine.
Yesterday, I removed a considerable amount of liquid via a pela and as it went on top of the old engine oil it was difficult to give it a visual. However, the dipstick had what looked like a grey emulsion on it. Engine oil quantity appeared normal.
What might make for an increase in liquid volume in the box? Failed input seal? Would this be an easy fix? Any way for water to get in?

Thanks in advance

The BW7 gearbox is totally separate from the engine and has no access to water. By far the most likely explanation is that the oil last added to the engine was contaminated.

This assumes that you are not referring to a Z-7 saildrive as fitted to the DV36..

My only reservation is that the manual says ' the oil change is carried out by means of the hand bilge pump fitted on the engine and the three-way cock which should be set in the position shown on the sketch (shown vertically upright). This is unknown to me, so just might be the source of your water if you have this arrangement.
