Want to top up the lubricating oil/fluid in my 72C gearboxes, googlenet indicates bog standard Dextron III.....
Yet the stuff in there at the moment, appears clear and does not have that distintive auto transmisson fluid pong. ?
My workshop manual is in the loft and cannot summon up the courage to go up and find it.
Any comments ?

If you run at under 3000 rpm, engine oil will do. SAE 30

Who mentioned synthetic oil??

Oldgit mentioned Dexron III which I think is often synthetic.

Some rubber seals are susceptible to attack by synthetic oils, the rubber turns to a sort of jelly. I mention it because a chum changed the oil in his and it led to a pair of complete rebuilds.
