BVI\'s fishing

Any comments re catching supper around the BVI's. Off there next week and fancy a change from the endless steak and ribs with fries or petrol flavoured lobster(crawfish)

Re: BVI\'s fishing

Troll a muppet (plastic squid) attahced to about 50lb line about 50m behind your craft. If you can get a 'bird' (artificial flying fish that puts up lots of spray) to place 1m up from the muppet so much the better.

Expect to catch tuna, dorado and kingfish. Best times at dawn and dusk. Any speed above about 3 knots will catch, pay especial attention to areas where the depth changes to over 30m.

Best of luck

Re: BVI\'s fishing

you showoff git, tico! Next, i suppose there'll be some poncy cruise in the Riviera eh? Anyway, one place to catch super is on the beach house restaurant at Peter Island which is *slightly* less rubbish than most other restaurants in the BVI.

Re: BVI\'s fishing

We're off to the BVI in three weeks and also fancy fishing, but the literature makes much of tropical fish poisoning (ciguerata or something like that) - is this serious, or just put about to keep the restaurants in business?

Re: BVI\'s fishing

Cigatura is a real threat but largely confined to large reef dwelling fish, especially barracuda. Fish, other than barracuda, caught in oceanic depths away from the shore are OK to eat, as are barras under about 5lb. Cigatura is a problem in large fish that concentrate a natural toxin found in and about coral reefs, hence the higher up to food chain and larger the fish the more the problem.

As ever, if in doubt ask a local.

Re: \"ask a local\"

er, not sure any blimmin local is gonna be able to be as informative as that! I wd restrict questions to the locals to "can i have a beer, please?" and "rememebr that beer i asked for, can i have it today?" and so on...

Re: \"ask a local\"

At the risk of taking your comment seriously, the guys in the docks/marinas are fairly knowledgeable about these things.

And whilst we're on the BVIs if you don't know already then for a real desert island feel go to Anegada. I beleive that now that they've bouyed the route through the reef charter boats are allowed to go there.

Re: $25 mooring buoys

Hoping to anchor as much as possible . . . $25 to tie up to a buoy with no facilities makes Tobermory seem v. reasonable.
