Hi All

Looking to either book a flottila or charter a boat in the BVI`s in July, anyone any recommendations on who to go with, and any issues regarding safety, 2 kids one 16 other 19, we have chatered boats before only in Greece for the last 3 years.

Many thanks

We used Sunsail out there (in hurricane season) and they were really good. We were there with three hurricanes but still a great time. (and its cheaper)

We did flotilla 5 years ago in July with the Moorings. It was great. We stayed one night in a hotel before joining the flotilla to get over the jet lag and then 5 nights nights at the Bitter End Yacht club after the week's flotilla. It was only my second yachting holiday and it was not a problem. Whole family loved it. BVIs is a fantastic destination with best snorkelling ever. Good sailing too

I recomend these guys....

Horizon yacht charters.... Smaller but well organised company with very clean boats... We have used both Sunsail and the Mooring as well... The Moorings is a nicer base, but the boats are a bit more dull.. .. and with Sunsail you are a bit out of town... and the boats are a bit higgedy piggledy.... plus I think that the Horizon lot are friendlier.

The Bavarias are a bit rarer out their as well, so its a bit different from the normal Bene's and Jeunaues....

Make sure you get here.....

Shoreside, BVI is the safest place you can get in the Caribbean - crime virtually non-existent. Sailing is just right for the not too experienced, like Greece all line of sight navigation. Had a couple of weeks there in July a few years ago, no hurricanes, a couple of short tropical squalls one night, all we had to do was double up our lines to the mooring buoy. Apart from that steady Easterly winds 15-20kts every day.

Local currency is US dollar, so watch the exchange rate - things will be a lot more expensive than last year. Overnight anchoring is not encouraged at most overnight stops - you will have to use a mooring for which you will be charged about $25 or more a night.

I know Sunsail are not the most popular outfit on this forum but FWIW I have chartered from them 3 times in BVI and couldn't fault their service or their boats.

Mooring, Sunsail and Footloose are all now based at Road Town at the same marina. They, I belive, are all part of the TUI group with Moorings being the top end charter company and footloose the other (and cheaper) end. BVI's are great and generally crime free and you will be as safe there as you are at home. There have been a few murders in 08, but they appear to be a local drug problem and have not affected tourists.. Theft from boats in Cane Garden Bay has also been a problem. Whilst the crew have been visiting Bomba's shack for full moon parties boats have been emptied, so make sure you lock up.
That said, I would recomend going there with the family, sailing brillent and the snorkling and diving great for teenagers. The beach bars are to dream of - where else can you find a bar where you help yourself (Oscars in white bay JVD. if I can believe my memory) and put the money in a glass on the bar..
I'm going back there later this month and can't wait..Cheapest flights are a long trip via JFK to St Thomas on AA at £390 plus a $50 ferry to Road Town.
PM if you want more details

I am just trying to guess the locations of your photos..... are they :
1 - Trellis Bay on Beef Island
2 - ?
3 - Soper's Hole on Tortola
4 - Canegarden Bay on Tortola
5 - ?

Another outfit to consider is TMM - they are a small charter company based on the south side of Road Town (opposite side to Moorings and Sunsail). http://sailtmm.com/
A pal of mine recently bought a Jeanneau SO 40 that had been with TMM for 10 years, and this boat stood out from the various vessels of similar vintage being offered for sale by Sunsail, Footloose and the Moorings.
(I think that boats generally seem to go into the Footloose fleet for 5 years after their first 5 years with the Moorings, and then they are usually sold off).

2 - Anegada somewhere - Cow Wreck?
5 - North Sound from somewhere around Bitter End?

Another vote from me for Horizon. Used them twice and they've been excellent.

Can recommend the BVI as a super destination (used Moorings when we went - excellent boats and service) - would perhaps question going there in July though. The locals have a saying 'July - Stand By!' as regards the hurricane season, but nothwithstanding the unlikely risk of a tropical storm, the weather is a lot more humid over the summer which can be a bit too sticky below decks in a boat (unless you've got a/c!). For me, the BVI would be a Winter/Spring destination and I wouldn't go there in the summer - although for the reasons above, it is a lot quieter.
