I'm continuing my quest for radar... I've found a price for a brand new, boxed, warranted JRC2000 of just £615. The price from an on-line supplier in the UK is quoted as £1,398. Not wishing to get into the old chestnut of value for money of UK on-line chandlers (this time!), can anyone tell me whether/what additional costs I should expect (tax?) if I buy from the US. Is there anything in particular I should watch out for? The kit 'looks' exactly the same as the UK same model details. Am I missing something or just about to save myself nearly £800?

Have bpught a lot of stuff from the US and have not regretted it in any case.
Most times I had the stuff shipped to a friend and then picked it up on the next trip, there. That was fine in the last five years since I was flying there twice a month.
Also had stuff shipped with mixed results on the additional cost. Sometimes shipping is very expensive, and then you need to pay local VAT and maybe a very low tax.
Warranty is much better than any place in Europe I know. I have brought two expensive devices back after two years to West Marine, and they gave me new ones on the spot. I know West Marine is known to be very good in cases like that, but still, most are better than what we are used to here.

You know that theoretically radar is a radio frequency emmiting device and would need some CE approval to be operated here, on the other hand it is the same radar that you get here and I don't think anybody bothers.

The price difference that you point out is enormous, so would easily cover VAT and shipping.

I am not sure but try and find out if the screening is the same, US specs demand much less screening (I don't know if it matters but), as for payments to make Shipping, VAT, import duty i am not sure what it all comes too today (I am no longer resident in the uk) but my guess is some where between 25 & 30% you will need to check in detail. If it is this much it will still offer quite a saving, you may also want to check and this could be vital if radars need a CE approval, if it is required the fines are substantial

I've just checked the display of my 1997 Furuno 1621 and there is no CE marking on it. I live in New York and bought it locally. FWIW
