Hi please can anybody tell me if they have bought anchor chain from Marine scene I am replacing 60 m of 8mm galvanized the windless is a Lofrans Cobra it has Din 766 and 8mm on it what does the Din 766 stand for ?
the price delivered is £345.00 is this likely to be best quality chain.
Regards Mike

DIN 766 is the standard for dimensions of metric chain, so OK for 8mm. Note: this is only for 'dimensions', grade of steel/strength (eg G30, G40.....) is a different standard.

I've always found Jimmy Green gives good advice for all mooring related products.

Ask them the source of the chain. I assume it is Chinese, in which case who is the importer? Good Chinese chain is excellent. The big importers such as William Hackett and Bainbridge carry out batch testing on their chain. You may well be able to obtain a load certificate. Usually their galvanising is quite good and will last longer than some others.

You may find this page useful Chain Ask them for a couple of sample links and try my QC tests.

Mike, I would suggest you use EYE Marine at Levington. They ship anywhere and provide a lot of the mooring chain/ warps etc for commercial vessels. A good deal cheaper than Jimmy Green. Also if you want to have a few metres of anchorplait attached they will do that as well.
I've now got about 45m of chain and 25m of rope on the same boat as you.

If you do not already know - 60m of 8mm chain is heavy!

If possible have the chain delivered to the yacht (boat yard, yacht club). It will be much more convenient.

Following Vyv's suggestions - if your distributor does not have a tests certificate of the batch from which your 60m will be taken - wonder why not. There are hundreds of chain makers in China. So far any recent tests, 5/10 years, have shown Chinese chain to be of good quality, over strength and well galvanised. But tests have only been conducted on chain imported by the major dealers (who have the chain tested).

A little tale about this. I took 60 metres of 8 mm chain to BE Wedge to be regalvanised. I loaded it into a relatively strong two-handled plastic basket, the type builders use. It was too heavy for me to lift so I piled the chain into it in my motorhome and drove to Willenhall. The foreman at Wedge lifted it out and carried it across the shop. Half way over one of the handles broke off, so he carried it the rest of the way with one hand! Repect.
