In the latest YM there is a warning article about the perils of buying boaty kit from the US. Both about compatablilty and eventual price, after extra taxes (p10).
On pages 128/9 West Marine (US) have a serious advert. Has anyone got any experience of these people? They are well set up for the UK. 0800 numbers and all that but I would imagine that there will still be all the import tax and vat problems to say nothing of p&p.

By the way, well done Stella Girl for keeping off the weed, but adding booze elimination is truely heroic. Come the SB autumn cruise to Cherbourg there has to something special awarded!!!

If you contact West Marine they will send you a UK price list inclusive of shipping and VAT. That sorts out the cost surprises. Comparing it with the US prices can be depressing!

The issue of warranties on grey imports is always tricky and depends on the goodwill or lack of it from local dealers.

Ask yourself what you would do if goods bought overseas turn out to be faulty. I bought a watermaker while passing through the Canaries and have regretted it ever since.

I have use West Marine, but only for goods that are unlikely to ever need a warranty claim. It is somewhat depressing that I can but an item of chandlery from West Marine, have it shipped and pay the necessary taxes and still find it is cheaper than my local swindlery! If in stock delivery is usually about three days too! Beats Pa***lfarce!

Surely, most folks know a US resident well enough to ask a small favour? Purchase your goodies for you and onward ship as a "gift". Did this many times when I was back home and never paid Vat or import duty. Have HM Customs tightened up on Birthday and Christmas presents in the 8 years I've been exiled?
